At current, Scott County Public Schools have two campuses in Georgetown (Ninth Grade School and Scott County High School) serving as the one and only public high school in the county.

 

The combined buildings were built to serve a total of 1,716 students, but current enrollment numbers have swelled well past their capacity as the total current enrollment of Scott County High School - the Commonwealth's largest high school - has reached 2,390.

 

As reported by the Lexington Herald-Leader and the Georgetown News-Graphic, Scott County Public Schools have approved construction for a new high school in the county, to be built in two phases. The $15.5 million first phase, set to open in the fall of 2017, will give the new school an initial capacity of 700 students for the '17/'18 school year. Upon completion of the $10 million second phase for '19/'20 school year, the new school's final capacity will be at 1,500 students.

 

Taking that news a step further, what impact will the new school have on each school's ability to compete in Scott County High School's two strongest athletic fields: football and boys' basketball?

 

Will the football team suffer the same fate as Shelby County High School did when the new Collins High School opened in Shelby County?

 

How about Scott County High School's boys' basketball team?

 

Football

Made it to the 6A semifinals in '09, '10, '12. They were the 6A runner-up in '11, and they won 6A in '13.

 

Boys' Basketball

Sweet 16 appearances in '98, '99, '00, '04, '10, '12, '14. Runners-up in the Sweet 16 Championship in '99, '14, and they won the Sweet 16 in '98 and '07 (in '07 they were ranked at #15 in the nation by USA Today).

The Bob Beatty to Bentonville discussion has me thinking that McKee could not have been a fan of this.

Let me ask this instead...is the school system growing at that much of an increasing, uncontrollable rate?

Go to our north and south, schools of 2,500 or more are common.

 

Here? Freak out mode. Let's build another high school then wonder why T and X continue to dominate what's now becoming all of the Big 3, as well as many of the country club sports as they have done for years as well.

 

Cue the "Athletics is no reason to keep a school at that size, as academics are the main priority of our schools" in 3....2....1.

first of all the freshman school and high school are attached and not on separate campuses. They built a tech school( ECS) at another campus which is on the same property as where the new school is going. Also with Toyota expanding their line and I hear about 300 plus families will be coming from the plant that shut down up north then yes I would say it will be needed. I will say this, for the first two years of the new school I have been told there will be NO athletics, so, I would assume that both Hicks and McKee will retire when the other school gets athletics. Just my opinion, but they both will be eligible to retire and they have to think this will hurt the athletic programs they have built there.

If they add on, no need for a new principal, etc. More little Johnnies and Janes will earn high school letters with a new school. Adding on might hurt the self-esteem of the new folks moving to Scott county.

From what I understand they are not having sports at the new school. Scott County doesnt want to divided.

I do think when the new school is up and running McKee will retire. It will be about the time his last son would graduate.

Why would they open a new school and not have athletics? Unless they are going to make Scott County the athlete school and the other school the academic school. Is this the case? Will it be open enrollment?

Who in the heck runs the Scott County School System....I'd like to offer them a position in Boone County Schools.....we'd love to combine all of our Middle School and High School athlete's into one football and basketball team. Instead we have them spread out at 4 High Schools. NO OPEN ENROLLMENT either. Please keep that in mind the next time you beat our buts........Lol

Just so you understand that if you live in Boone co, and do not like the way the school system is then move. Also if you had 1 school it would have about 4000 plus students, Scott Co has 2300. They have 3 middle schools and it is my understanding that the new school will have athletics when the phase that includes the facilities is done. I don't know if they have will have open enrollment or not. But I do ask this, do you use the same excuse when Dixie or SK beat you that they have open enrollment and that is why we lose.

So what name are they going with? Could they do like the Laurel County schools? If seperated and Both have sports they would both possibly be in the 5A range.
