5 or 6 class football revisited

Featured Replies

I don't mean to be out of bgp guidelines or anything, but would one of the classes be all Private Schools seperated? What does everyone think of that proposal? Again, I don't mean to get into the Public / Private debate.

For this thread, that's not an option.

THere is also a disparity in single A Coach Jackson at Pikeville has done great research on this topic and has posted it on here several times, it is not just a X and T thing 6 classes would be better for footballa dn make the opportunity for more kids to see the post season, something that every other sport in KY gets to do except football.

4a is not the ony class that top teams double the bottom in enrollment.

Look at Class A. There are more smaller schools that have to play teams double their enrolment. That is why 6A is a better answer than 4 or 5

No doubt Class A is the other class with a large disparity in enrollment.

I think most of us agree if there is a change go for the gold and go to six classes.

I am an alumni / fan of a class A school, I would agree with the 6 class system as yourself and coach Buckett mentioned.

First my opinion, four classes is the max KY should ever have because there are just not enough schools to justify more classes. However, if the coaches association and the KHSAA both think this is a good idea I am ok with it which brings me to my point. If KY goes to more classes we need to go for the gold and make it six classes and not five. My reasons for doing so:

1. If some is good more is better. Six classes gives more teams light at the end of the tunnel, more teams will be in the playoffs, and more champions will be crowned.

Guru,

I love your motive for the ideas put forth - to build enthusiasm and grow the game of HS football in KY.

I do respectfully disagree with the generic idea of "so more is better" means we may as well have 6 classses as 5. Theres no reason all classes have to be balanced exactly with the same # of schools - that goes for the largest as well as the smallest class. A little analysis (OK, maybe a lot) of enrollments, geography, common sense could create a new larger classification system of varying numbers.

The problem with straight divisions of equal # is exemplified by a list posted previously on BGP. We at Ashland were right on the dividing line, it would result in the closest team in our class being 1 hour away then the next 2 closest teams were 2 hours away, after that who knows. It has nothing to do with competition. Ashland played up competitively for quite a few years in 4A despite having lost numbers years before. Surely a board can be created to review requests by schools who wish to "play up" in classification. Requests would be based on travel, natural & historical rivals, (& maybe something else?) and NOT on creating a competitive advantage. The board can review these requests and make sure districts aren't disrupted or anyone is gaining an advantage.

FYI - an earlier thread about # of football classes had 165 votes by BGPers

(rounding off the percentages ....):

69 voted for four (4) classes - thats 42%

46 voted for five (5) classes - thats 28%

50 voted for six (6) classes - thats 30% , so 58% voted for an increase

I've been for 5 classes (preferring gradual change unless something is broke)

which basically would create this 'super" class people have been mentioning.

There have been comments about some other schools "getting their act together" to compete against T & X. It seems to me that its as much, if not more, a factor of population and geography situations. Scott Co. has become a power b/c of the influx of people for jobs. Dunbar was created "as a power to be" IMO in a growing area of Lex. while former powers like Bryan Station was losing people left & right. I don't claim to be an expert on all the various regions of the state, but with the invariable consolidations that should only continue, there will only be more and more bigger schools and less & less smaller schools. As an Ashland supporter I know we only get smaller while the county schools all around us basically get bigger. I'm guessing that a school like Danville may be in a similar situation with Boyle Co. (I'm just throwing out some ideas).

When I hear people complain about T & X winning titles I think the thing that must be looked at is whether other teams are competitive on the field or if they are being manhandled and don't have a chance. To me there is a big difference between not being able to win the title game versus not being competitive on the field of play. Are they totally dismantling every team they play or are they just finding a way to win every year?

Playoffs ?

Some folks want every school to be involved. I like the basic idea but it seems to me there are a lot of #1 - #4 games that are a waste of time. I know there are some upsets and competitive games but generally they seem to be uncompetitive. Perhaps I'm offbase & someone could provide stats? on those games. Perhaps to include everyone they could to split districts into more sub-districts (or like idea) so that the playoffs would start earlier and it would be #1 vs. #2 in the an opposite district [i hope I've gotten the idea out there sufficiently for debate]. There are all kinds of creative options; rotating other districts onto regular season schedule and/or playoff brackets, etc.

Also, is there anyone out there who would NOT like to see the 1A champs play the 2A champs, the 3A champs play the 4a champs?

...and then you could have those winners play??? :thumb:

Hey what can I say - I love football :D :D :D :D

Woody, I agree with what you said about the travel distance. I know that Raceland is in a class A district that includes LCA, Berea, Paris, Nicholas Co.( 11/2 to 2hr or longer drives). I persoanlly for years would have like to had seen Raceland go up to AA in the local AA district. The travel would be closer with that District being Russell, East C., West C.,Lewis Co.,Fleming Co,Morgan Co. and I think Powell and Estill Co. (those two I think would be the furthest). Raceland, I believe could compete in this district and actually fair better in the first couple of rounds in the playoffs raher than having to play the northern Ky. district with powers such as Beechwood, New Cath and Bellevue every year. I at least would love to see the class A district playoffs rotate on which district plays another in the playoffs each year. I know that B.T. Ross lobbied for that for years when he was at Raceland. As for the AA district that I mentioned, that district is full with 8 teams and I don't know if a shuffle in the districts could be done or not. (move one or two of this districts teams into another maybe with smaller number of teams or what). Finally Woody, I also agree that 4 teams going to the playoffs from each district is too many. IMO I could maybe see three with the district champ getting a bye in the first round and the #2 playing #3. That would give teams something more to strive for as winning the district title. Oh well Woody, wouldn't it all be better if they would just listen to you and I   I don't think they realize how bright we really are:p  :D :thumb:

Gosh Rambler, I'll just have to go ahead and agree with you on that last part - no sense causing dissent :D

People may listen to me - but I'm not sure if it's in shock or awe:p

I can't decide the best playoff scenario. It kinda sounds like one of the factors in the 6 class idea is that the less number of schools in each class will allow for everyone to be in the playoffs. At face value it sounds good but still doesnt seem to address the #1/#4 imbalances. A bye sounds like a good reward but from being around enough coaches I'm guessing they prefer playing each week rather than a bye. I remember one of the few years when Russell was in our district and we both had a bye before the playoffs began (not sure if a lot of the teams did also or not?). I think it bothered the coaches to get out of that routine - but who knows:confused:

From Mike Fields article in yesterdays HL...

Kentucky high school football, which went from three classifications to four in 1975, might be bumped up to five or six classes. Over the next few weeks the KHSAA will crunch the numbers to see how the state's 224 football schools would be aligned into districts in five- and six-class formats and present those findings to the Board of Control in May.

The dominance of St. Xavier and Trinity in Class 4A football is one of the driving forces behind the public-private debate. So the board will look at altering the playoff bracket so the powers would meet earlier in the post-season, rather than in the state finals.

That second part is an eye opener.

Im sitting here wondering if that is something the KDE has put in the ear of the BOC or is that a result of the member delegates complaints? I can't believe that the KHSAA powers would be in favor of this idea.

I will just address the last part (week off) since it aleady been established that we know everything:lol: . I remember the week off before the playoffs also, at that time I had not gotten to know a lot of coaches at that time. One scenerio is that the week off reward would give you more preparation time and extra time for injuries to heel. On the other hand it would break your routine that you had been going on all season. I personaly do not like as many teams making the playoffs, I know that when they get right down to it is is about $$$ imo but playoffs give a team / school something to strive for. I remember one year right after Ky. went to 4 teams from a district going, Greenup Co. was in a four team district, won one game all season(Ithink) and were 0-4 in district play. They made the playoffs by default! I am not knocking GCHS, just is one example that I could think of - I am sure that there were others across the state. Having said all of that I love high school football and will support it no matter what it done or decidied :thumb:

I think going to six classes would actually result in one week being cut from the playoffs and therefore push all starting dates back one week to keep everyone out of the heat.
