Let's face it. Allen pretty much won this award with his outstanding play in last year's Sweet 16. As many awards go, when you're labeled the favorite, you have to either get injured, fall off the face of the earth, or have someone put up monster numbers to surpass him. None of those three happened.

 

I'm sure there is no more deserving person to win Mr. Basketball than Mr. Allen. He wouldn't have been my choice, but I'm not on here downing his accomplishments. Just have a different point of view than some.

I would think 2 POY awards, 1st team All State honors, State Tourney MVP, a State Championship Ring, and a Mr. Basketball award would say that the minority opinion is completely wrong.

I mean give the kid some credit. Not only does he have all that to boast, but he is an A+ student and person, as well as a true leader on and off the court. There is no one more deserving to represent our state as Mr. Basketball then Walt.

I will totally agree that a big reason he won this award was becuz of his Sweet 16 performance last season. But to say that his senior season was a flop, or that he isnt deserving is just funny.

You've insisted all along that this is a "high school basketball' award, like we didn't already know that.

 

When evaluating high school players, I couldn't care less about college potential. What matters is what they've done on the court. From what I've seen, and some others agree, there are other players out there that are just as deserving, or even more so.

 

Lots of guys have won Mr. Basketball that weren't necessarily the best players ... by your logic, Josh Carrier and Elton Scott were clearly the best in their senior seasons because they won the award. Others would strongly disagree.

I've been told in the past that most Mr. Basketball votes are in before the Sweet 16 is played. Since I'm not affiliated with the Lions Eye Foundation, I don't know.

The qualifications for Mr. Basketball has dropped off in the last few years, since Lofton. Although, Allen is a good person, he was the third best player on his team behind Profitt and Hammons. Smith at Harlan was probably one of the best all around talents, in the 13th before he was injured IMO. Crawford, a freshman, was a better player than Allen. Jones at Clay was also better. Slaughter or Owens IMO should have been Mr. Basketball, if you were going by the old standards for selecting the best player! Mr. Basketball should be a division 1 player.

By that account, Jared Carter could have been Mr Basketball last year as he went to UK on scholly which is a much more established D1 basketball school then UT.

On the bolded..... then I guess Mr. Basketball isnt a HS award, and should just go to the top ranked college prospect in the state. After all is doesnt matter how great a HS player you were, it just matters how high you can jump and how athletic you are, and not what you accomplished on the court.

He was absolutely better then Hammonds, and although I think Proffitt is a better all around talent, you have to remember that you are comparing 2 totally different positions. Heck, using your logic Allen may have been the 4th best player on the SL squad behind Proffitt, Hammonds, and also Trey Smith.

 

As far as the 13th region goes...... according to you there were 5 players ( Proffitt, Hammonds, Jones, Smith, Crawford) in the 13th region better then a 2-time POY, First Team All-State, State Champion, State MVP, KY Mr. Basketball. I would assume you would also think that Stewart Miller from Middlesboro was better then Mr. Allen since he is a Division 1 walk-on and that Trey Smith for SL was probably better then Allen as well. That is alot of talent in one of the perenially weaker regions in the state.

 

The only player with a chance of having the HS career Allen had is Proffitt from SL, and a big reason for that is because of Allen. Call me when any of the other 5 supposed better players then Allen achieve what that kid did, and do it with as much class and respect as he did.
