Holmes actually has some really good young talent and kids roaming the halls that don't play for whatever reason.

I just went and read PBR's evaluation of Doty. Seems like they really like him a lot. You mean to tell me Highlands is so loaded they can afford to keep a kid with an 82-84 mph fastball and "some of the best secondary stuff of the day" as described by PBR on the JV team??? Not too many high school teams can keep a pitcher like that down.

I will answer that for you with a Yes, but I would expect for him to get some innings at the varsity level as well. May need to pitch JV in order to stay sharp. I know that many have said it on here already, but Highlands is loaded in the pitching department for the next several years. If they can hit the ball and play defense, they are certainly a 9th region contender and with their pitching could make a nice run in the state tourney if they get that far. There will be more than a handful of kids that could start for most any team in NKY that may be relegated to JV in order to stay sharp and continue to hone their skills.

I would agree that Blake Rodersheimer was one of the best catchers last season if not the best. I would like to know how many kids stole bases against him last season. Also, A pitchers stats has a lot to do with the skill and knowledge of the catcher behind the plate. Boone had a few pitchers last season who had great seasons including NKY player of the year , Trey Ganns. A catcher can make or break a pitcher. He will be a hard player to replace behind the plate.

This may be true once kids get older and catchers call the game. Not so sure this applies last year at Boone. Although, Rodershiemer is a really good catcher

The top four catchers in the 9th are all Seniors and are all very good at what they do. Any team would be happy to have anyone of them behind the plate. Theses guys are all very solid behind the plate on defense, blocking, throwing and they can all hit.

 

1) Blake Roedersheimer - Boone

2) Luke Hennigan - Highlands

3) Jake Schmidt - Beechwood

4) Marshall Rich - Ryle

 

Hope you are right about Schmidt. He's a good kid and I would like to see him do well. Quite frankly I just didn't see it. His Bat is pretty good, but defensively, he struggled in the games I saw and I got reports of same from other games.

 

He works hard and gave up other sports to focus on Baseball. So I hope he earns that 3 spot you put him in.

If you're talking pros and maybe some college I agree. It's rare that a catcher in high school determines a pitcher's fate or stats. At the higher school level it's 99% pitcher and coach.

I agree it's rare that a catcher at the high school level determines the fate of a pitcher. I don't think anyone is saying that the Roedersheimer kid is determining anyone's fate but he can flat out pick em behind the plate. He helps his pitchers a lot with his blocking and throwing not to mention his receiving. He steals more strikes than anyone I've seen in a long time.

If a catcher has that much control over the pitcher, that's on the pitcher. My son quickly learned to shake off his catcher who seemed to love to call for fastballs against cleanup guys :idunno:
