11 days no murders in NYC (Modern Day Record)

Featured Replies

That's about to change. I just got here. Hate this place.

You jinxed them!

I hate to say this, but I feel tonight is the night. But then again, when it's very cold and or snowy, murders go down.

Didn't the overall crime rate take a nose dive when the NYPD officers decided that they were going to quit arresting people except for the worst offenses to protest the Mayor?

Maybe if we fire all cops, all crime will stop too! :lol2:

You surely don't that think people are committing thefts, robberies, rapes, murders, dealing drugs, assaults and other crimes just because the police are arresting people and quit when police quit arresting people?

The stats may have went down because no one was working petty cases so there was no hard info for the crime rate to be determined by. But I bet criminals didn't quit because the police eased up.

I'd say the crime rate should drop if the police do less. It's not hard to figure that one out. Less arrests, less patrolling, probably going to catch less criminals therefore stats will decrease.

Are catching criminals and people being murdered the same thing? I'm not understanding something here.

Average Joe brought up the overall crime rate. Keep up.

Two decades ago an average of 6 people per day were murdered in NYC. Last year the average was less than 1 per day. Did that have nothing to do with police?

Thanks for the motivation. I will try to do better.

So if "the police are doing less", that means that by definition, reporting statistics are down. Should that also mean that the number of citizens being murdered are down as well? Or are murder victims simply not being found?

And if there is indeed some cause-and-effect relationship here, is that an acceptable trade-off?

I'm not relating the decrease in police production to the decrease in murders. I'm only talking about the overall crime rate because that's what Joe mentioned, and that's who I was responding to.

Gotcha. And I do understand that there is often a difference between "overall crime rate" and "reported crime rate".
