"One of the first times I ever played against him, I went out for the opening tip and I went to shake his hand. He just stood there and looked at me stone-faced with his hands behind his back," Wilkins said recently.

 

"I was like, 'Whoa.' Then we were getting ready for the tip and he says to me, 'You don't belong in this league, Homes.' I couldn't believe it, but it happened so fast, I didn't know what to think.

 

"Then they had the ball and I was on him and he said, 'I don't know why they got you guarding me, Homes. You can't guard me.' Then, whap, he hit a 3. Then he came down again and said, 'They made a mistake putting you on me, Homes,' and he took another 3."

I remember that one Clyde. One of my all time favorites. Bird was one of the best trash talkers ever. Another one was when he showed up at one of the 3 point contests and told everyone else they were playing for second place and then won without taking his warm up jersey off.

My fav was he was playing the Knicks , tie game or celtics down 1 -- Celtics ball . Out of bounds play on the baseline .just a couple seconds left . Bird comes out of the huddle and tells the guy guarding him " Im going to catch it right here and hit the game winning shot when I catch it " and " there isn't anything you can do about it " then procedes to hit the game winner .

And went out west on a road trip and scored 20 some straight points LEFT handed .

I love to hear these old trash talk tales from some of the NBA legends.

One of the best Bird stories is when he scored 60 against the Hawks (Doc was on that Hawks team). Bird was throwing them in from EVERYWHERE that night. The footage of the HAWKS bench reacting to Bird's shots is incredible. Guys were rolling around and acting like Bird was on their team...they were in awe.
