Without looking it up, I think the last time Covcath lost to Highlands was maybe in the 08-09 season at BOKC when Holmes beat Scott Co in the following game?

 

What does Holmes and Scott County have to do with the question asked ? Biased Again....

Obviously there is a trend here in the latest results for this series.

 

CovCath has had better coaching, better players and more kids playing basketball specifically as their main sport.

 

It is not rocket science to figure out why they are beating the Birds consistently as of late.

 

The last time Highlands beat CovCath with any consistency the Birds had exceptional players like Jeffrey Vories, McGraw/Simpson, Neltner, etc. I have not seen any of those type players in the past 4-5 seasons.

 

Meanwhile, CovCath has ramped up their program by hiring one of the best coaches in the Nation IMO and having players commit to the program more than 3-4 months out of the year.

 

Hopefully Coach Listerman can change this and the rivalry can get back to what it used to be.

Its really hard to define. Is there another Nick Ruthsatz or Brandon Hatton out there in the grade school ranks? They just dont come along as often as we would like.

How many good players that were in the pipeline for HHS basketball left prior to Freshman year, or stopped playing altogether? And did they avoid HHS basketball because of coaching, and/or football?

 

My son is a Senior now and I remember HHS being pretty good at basketball in middle school.

Agreed. Case in point . . . CVH. Helluva footballer now concentrates on Bball. Would that be the case if CCH were still mediocre to good as in just prior to Coach R.

Ben Weyer comes to mind. I seem to remember there being a big debate when he left HHS after his 8th grade year? Qryche might know, but wasn't his sister a standout soccer player for the Birds with his older siblings all going to Highlands?

Weyer is a long time HHS name (some you talk to on here!). Ben made a choice based on his desires and turned out not to be a bad decision. He was a big name bball player that got away. But I think he saw there might not be much help to go along with him in the Fort.

 

However, I will say there are MANY younger kids giving up football in the MS and below that are focusing on bball. It's coming! Some really nice classes. The key to success at HHS is having those elite bball guys and then mixing with the football athletes. That's always been the case at HHS. As Q stated, we haven't had those elite BBall only guys in the last couple years and some of the footballers weren't coming out. With success, I feel you will see the return of the footballers. And success is on it's way.

Right, the overall talent level is going to be better I feel. They will still be missing the game changers that Q named, unless something dramatic changes as kids mature. At the middle school age, you knew that Smith, Neltner, and Lorenzon were special. The upcoming teams will, IMO, rely on being talented and deep teams where there are no true "stars" but there is no significant drop off in talent 1-10.

Are you kidding me with this nonsense? Ben Weyer played AAU basketball with everyone of the kids in the current junior class except for Hergott from the time he was 9 years old. He also played with other teams along the way, but always played with this group also. In their last AAU game together as a group they handled many of the current Colonels pretty easily. Ben Weyer left because of the coaching situation at the time and he also understood that all of these kids played football as well. Did he make a bad decision, no, but it certainly had nothing to do with the talent level of the kids that he was playing with. You put him with this group of juniors and they are pretty solid.

 

Sick and tired of hearing about middle school talent that does not pan out when they get to high school. The success of Highlands over the years had to do more with kids moving into the district to play for the Birds than it did with what came through the middle school. How about these names, Sullivan, Maile, Lankheit, Draud, Smith, Lorenzen, Terry. Enough said.

 

Highlands hoops is what it is and now that they have a coach in place that appears to be there for the long haul and has the kids buying into the program 100%, I would expect things to improve over the next several years. Will they be regional contenders, only time will tell, but a lack of size is hard to overcome.
