Overall the Birds showed well and the football kids played well. Some rust was evident as they turned it over and missed son FT's.

For the Crusaders Goetz played really well and Logan Kenny was money from the Line. Kunstek Never could get going fue to foul trouble.

Goetz had 180 degree turnaround from the CovCath debacle. Kenney had a really good game, besides the FT's, some very nice "dimes".

 

For the 1st game, the Birds looked good. Very strong effort to take the lead early in the 4th after being down middle of the 3rd.

 

And I agree with your call about the officials in the update thread, they were having a bad night.

Nothing noticeable.

Have to give Highlands credit for making this a good game. Going in, I didn't think St.Henry would have much trouble with them. I'd think Coach Listerman would be fun to play for. They seem to involve a lot of the younger grade school kids in things (throwing shirts to them at introductions, water boys), it will pay off in the one run. And the kids played care free and not afraid to take shots (Ball throwing them up from deep) and they played hard.

Goetz played a nice game for the Crusaders. He needed the bounce back from the last game.

I think the Birds will be Fine sooner rather than later actually. Parker Harris is much improved at taking his Man off the dribble and has good length. Hebel is a space eater with a nice touch around the basket. Caín and Weyer are 2 football players who will work out the kinks and provide scoring. Kenny Ball can stroke it and Daugherty/Kendall once back will provide strong defensive play. Listerman has a nice nucleaus and by January I can see them beating some teams.

Pretty good effort all things considered. As I said yesterday, this team will play hard and has a little more talent than people give them credit for. Hebel will see more minutes as the season moves along. Quality time out of Austin Hergott tonight as well. Weyer struggled a little with his shot, but that is to be expected given a weeks worth of practice. Cain played extremely well for the first game of the season. Ball and Harris were solid as you would expect from your seniors. Certainly would have been nice to see if the Birds could have pulled this one out if at full strength, but that will not be the case all year as Dougherty is out for the entire year.

Will echo the statements that several have already made.

 

Goetz stood out for the Crusaders. Really nice handle and finishes at the rim (especially against an undersized team like HHS). Birds did start the game with Harris (6'4") on him but early fouls caused the Birds to switch to Cain. He did a nice job.

 

Kunstik is a nice player. He was a liability on the defensive end due to match-up problems. When the Birds went small he was on Ball who lives on the perimeter. Kunstik had trouble closing out and Kenny hit several threes. Faust made adjustments and took that away late in the game.

 

Liked the tempo and confidence of HHS. First game, limited practices - encouraged. Not at the level of the top 5 of N Ky, but will compete with the rest of the teams.

 

Hope our friends in stripes take the opportunity to watch the replay available on livesportscaster and critique themselves. A few come to mind. Three obvious blown calls on balls going out of bounds. 2 given to the Birds and one to St Henry that the official making the call had to be the only person in the gym who saw it that way. The shot by Harris that was blocked out of bounds 5 feet right of the backboard was given to St Henry. I could understand if the official thought Parker lost control on the way up, but he told Parker that he shot it in that direction. No help from either of the two officials. The 4th foul on Weyer is the one in the broadcast that Buttels refers to as horrible. I can only assume the official knew he blew the call because Justin's reaction deserved a T and none was given.

Great effort by the birds last night. They will be a contender as soon as they get into the flow of the season.
