Seriously...Highlands is great on O...but they stink on D...anyone trying to argue the otherwise is silly. This is one thread that the Highlands contingent needs to just stay out of...in fact I really think Sweeper may have thrown that out there just to get that poor guy bashed.

 

In the last three rounds of the playoffs, they gave up...34, 26, & 42

In 2014, they gave up...41 to Bryan Station, 38 to CC (FL), 49 to Elder, and then their playoff run...yes all good teams, but Highlands ain't too shabby themselves.

 

Don't even get me started on 2013 when they were even worse.

 

Highlands is the most consistently good offense in the state (yes, I said that out loud Trinity people) but they are shamefully bad on D.

Go back and watch the game and pay close attention to alignment and assignment in the first half versus the second. If memory serves me correctly, the kicker ended up playing most of the second half somewhere out there and I do not remember seeing him much in the first half. Good call Sweep. As the saying goes, Offense sells tickets and Defense wins championships. Offense did what they did most of the year and the defense stepped up and did what they needed to do in the second half.

 

Doing just enough to win does not equate a Great Defensive Coordinator. Defensive Coordinator on the best team yes, best defensive Coordinator in the state, not a chance!

What happened was they put 8 in the box and changed the assignments. Also blitzed at least 1 if not 2 inside backers on every play. The dive play looked like it was there with the way the defense was aligned at the snap, however the various stunts that were taking place took that away. The pitch man was now accounted for by an outside backer rather than a cornerback.

If the DC had the corner responsible for the pitch, he should not be the considered DC of the year. Heck, I will rather take the guy who coaches with me on our youth team to run the defense. I will take him on my high school team, as well! PM coming.....

That may be a good adjustment, but that is terrible preparation in the week leading up to the game. It isn't like they came out with new wrinkles, they were running there base offense.

The first year coordinator at Highlands who gives up a ton of points is not the best DC in the state period.

A. They gave up 42 points in a half

B. They platoon 100% but he waited till 42 points and halftime to switch from 2 high coverage and run force to the old 3-3 stack with 1 high that they used to run under Wienrich. (wouldn't be surprised if he was the one that made the suggestion)

C. Hey guys we're getting killed in cover 4 so lets run some cover 3 instead! Boom now i'm the best DC in the state. Never mind that my film study and entire week of preparation was getting destroyed.

Not sure of names on some of these, however I think the 5 best defenses in the state this year were, CAL-gave up 93 points, Desales-103 points, Bowling Green-113 points, Manual-136 points, and St. X (at the end of the year was much better than early in the year) 169 points. Now clearly there are on different levels as far as schedule strength. I would honestly put Bowling Green and Manual at the top for the reason of how bad their offenses were this year, which put them in numerous bad situations and still produced.

Didn't T score 48 vs Meade? I'm going with X having the best defense in 6a. As aforementioned in reference to another team, X's offense wasn't good and the defense had to compensate for them.

We held Warren Central (at Warren Central) to 10..Male (at Male) to 17..undefeated Central Hardin (At Central) to 8..high powered Henry Clay (#1 rusher in 6A) to 14 and last year 6A champ Scott co (At Scott) to 24.

 

By the way North Hardin had one the best offenses in the state. Their QB was ranked #1 and their RB #1 or 2 in 5A. North just had issues on defense.

 

Yes Trinity came in playing at a high level and beat us..they also put 30+ on Male..and 50+ on 6A runnerup Dixie Heights. We had one bad defensive game in the 14 we played. IF X and Manual played better D they might have made it to the 6A state semi finals.
