Historically speaking, has Belfry ever played Boyle or Catholic? I know they haven't in the playoffs, but what about regular season?

I think they played Catholic once in the Pike County Bowl, but they have never played Boyle.

No I was wrong, Pikeville beat Lexington Catholic in the PCB back in 93, but Belfry never played them.

I think people are overlooking Belfry and Central already and that's not wise.

All I will say is this... Boyle during the first Chuck Smith run would be the favorite every year in the new 3A. No questions asked!

 

Boyle during the Coach French run used to have a dogfight with Bell County every year. Most anticipated when Bell was "moving down" to 3A that they would step right in and take over.

 

Bell has since never advanced past the Regional Finals in 3A. Boyle has since never reached another State Final in 4A.

 

Ft. Campbell entered 3A on a dynasty. They had won 3 2A State Finals. They have never been a factor really in the 3A big picture.

 

With Smith back I anticipate Boyle finds some of their mojo again. With that said, from what I have seen of Boyle the past 4 years it wouldn't surprise me in the least to see Belfry vs. Central Round 6 and Round 7... it also wouldn't surprise me to see Boyle hoist the trophy. Boyle fans remember those strong Bell teams... Belfry is playing near or above that same level right now and still have several years looking good in the pipepline.

I agree those Bell teams were strong and I don't think Belfry has had a team that could play with those Bell teams, IMO the reason Bell hasn't dominated 3A is the absence of Dudley Hilton less face it Bell has not been the same since Dudley left. I think Belfry and Central's undoing will be the lack of a passing game Boyle has one of the best run defense's in the state year in and year out, and Boyle owned Central the last time they were in 3A, and I think Boyle will only get better now that Chuck is back.

I'm not saying Boyle and Lex Cath will dominate 3A, but IMO the days of Belfry and Central dominating 3A are over they have some competition now, I wish Boyle and Lex Cath were on different sides of the bracket like they use to be that way Belfry would have some competition before they got to the title game.

Belfry has Corbin and Bell on their side as well as Russell which has gotten their program back on track. Region 2 out West is a gauntlet...but Belfry will most likely have to beat 3 Top 10 teams next year to advance.

 

People continue to try and take this pot shot..mainly because Belfry really did have a cakewalk this year, no denying that... but this simply has been an erroneous assumption prior to this year.

 

Bourbon County was IMHO the 2nd best team in the State in 2013 and that team would have been 2nd best this year as well. Breathitt's program has fallen on hard times but their 2011 and 2012 teams were really strong, easily one of the Top 3 or 4 teams in the Class those years. Garrard's 2011 team was the prototype of a team peaking at the right time. In 2010... the weakest Belfry team of their run of Finals got there by beating the #1 Undefeated Somerset team and going on the road to beat a Mason County team that was ranked #3.

 

The "easy path" argument would have more merit if Belfry were getting smacked in the Finals..but instead they proved their mettle and won two titles and had two losses to Central in games that were essentially dead even. The lone blowout was that over achieving 2010 team who had what appeared the toughest path to the Championship.

 

As I said, this year was by far the weakest the Eastern side has ever been...but that didn't stop Belfry from winning a title once they met the team who beat potentially the top three teams out West.

 

In your previous post you mentioned how Boyle had "owned Central" while also saying the reason Bell ha struggled in 3A is because Dudley was not there. To this I ask what was Boyle's record against Central when they had Ty Scroggins as Head Coach? Scroggins, like Hilton, is one of the finest coaches in the State and has elevated their program.

 

You also mention Boyle's run defense as the catalyst but Belfry knows a few things about defense as well. Even Chuck's dominant Boyle tams never had Back to back Finals where they did not allow a single offensive score. Over the past 4 Finals Belfry has allowed a grand total of 21 offensive points and you have to go back 17 playoff games to find the last time a team ran for 150 yards on them. The Pirate Starting Defense hasn't allowed a team to gain 100 rush yards the past two Playoff runs.

For the record I do agree that the days of Central and Belfry being the be all end all of 3A is over. I have no doubt LexCath, Boyle, and possibly Tilghman will definitely change the picture and make this class "Must Watch Football" come November. But... as I said.. from what I have seen out of Boyle and LexCath the past few years I could also see Central vs. Belfry in the Finals two more times... or I could see someone else hoisting the trophy just as easy.

Don't get me wrong I've rooted for Belfry every time they played Central I met some of their fans at the Garrard game a few years ago some of the best most passionate fans I've ever met, and I have the up most respect for their program they have great tradition, but so does Boyle the Rebels have won 7 state titles so we have some tradition to. I'm not trying to take anything away from Belfry all I'm trying to say is with the edition of Boyle and Lex Cath Life in 3A just got a whole lot tougher. In closing to the best of my knowledge Boyle has never lost to Central no matter who their coach was 3A is gonna be fun the next 4 years.

I know...but this was their first season under Coach Rogers and his Wing T.

 

I expect Tilghman to make major strides in the coming years.
