Jon Lester signs with the Chicago Cubs

I didn't like it when Bako was Maddux's, and don't like it now.

When you've got $155 million+ invested in your ace you try and make him comfortable. You've got Martin, the backup won't play but about 40 games. Ross is still a great defensive player and calls a great game. Don't forget the Red Sox trusted him enough to catch him in 8 out of their 16 postseason games in 2013 after only playing in 36 games in the regular season.

I know they probably wouldn't trade in the division but would it be possible that the Reds trade Cueto or Latos to the Cubs for Addison Russell and more prospects?

I would guess that the Cubs would be more likely to deal Starlin Castro than Russell.

I think Russell is off limits. There is talk of moving him to second base or left field and keeping Castro at short. Bryant will be at third by the all-star break if not sooner. I think Javy Baez is their trade chip. I'd rather see them trade Castro. I think he brings more in return but Baez strikes out a lot and that is a concern of the front office in putting Baez at short full-time.

The logjam is in the outfield. Chris Coughlan is a former ROY with the Marlins who won the left field job. If they move Russell to the outfield, they have Jorge Soler in right field.

I hear they are kicking the tires on Johnny Gomes.

One crazy rumor has the Cubs looking at Evan Longoria. They could eat the rest of his contract, put him at third, and move Bryant to left field. They have the prospects to deal. Baez and 1-2 of their top young pitchers would have to be included in any deal.

You knew the Cubs would have this much financial flexibility once they got out from under the horrid Jim Hendry contracts that included Alfonso Soriano ($136 million), Carlos Zambrano ($91 million), Milton Bradley ($30 million), and Koske Fukudome.

It should be fun watching Joe Maddon steer this ship

Reading this thread is depressing...I think it is going to be a loooooong season for Reds fans. Can we get the Astros back in the division???

Cubs sign former STL closer Jason Motte to a one year, incentive based deal. Low risk, high reward.
