New Teams in SEC?

Featured Replies

I'd like to see any of the following; UNC, Duke, Virginia Tech, FSU, Texas or Baylor... In reality, I'd say expansion is done for a while.

Very real possibility the Big 12 has its hand forced if they don't get a team in the playoffs this year. They might want to stay at 10, but without a conference title game they are going to be left out far more often than not. If they add 2 or 4 teams it should stabilize for a while. If not, it will get crazy again eventually...

Most of the conference expansions have been about increasing the "footprint" of the conference, i.e. adding a state that they don't already have. I agree with D-Rob, they'd shoot for teams like UNC (who'd never do it) and Virginia/Virginia Tech (who might) first.

I also don't think Florida is in support of FSU coming to the SEC.

This.

ACC teams have lost much of the incentive to move. The 10-year grant of rights deal that all the schools signed before this season means that if UNC or Virginia Tech or whoever decided to make the move to chase that SEC Network money, the ACC would get all of it until 2024.

I'm with gametime in that it's possible the Big XII has to do something but that'll mean taking a team from a smaller league they probably don't really want rather than poaching from another league. Apart from that, I think expansion is finished for a while.

I think if they try to hold at 10 the league will eventually fall apart which makes it a free for all again. If they expand it will no doubt be teams like UC, UConn or UCF...

I thought it would be a good idea to round up the Texas schools and create the Lone Star Conference with the Lone Star Network and I bet you could get some major dollars- Texas, A&M, Baylor, TCU, SMU, Rice, Tech, UH, UTEP, North Texas, Texas State and UTSA.

UT screwed that up with their Longhorn Network deal, though.

Nothing much will happen until 2025 when the Big XII's own grant of rights is up. I'm curious as to what you think makes 10 an inherently unstable number. Can it not survive that way?

It the 4 team playoff system, no. With no conference title game their one loss teams will get passed up more often than not...

So which happens first: The league deciding it needs to take two teams to get into the playoff, or the playoff expanding to eight teams, which might make such expansion unnecessary?

Billion dollar question...

Since the term southeast often includes VA, WVA and NC I'd target those states. Virginia Tech, WVA and Duke.

I have a hard time imagining any of the North Carolina schools leaving as they represent a nice voting bloc in the ACC that tend to serve each other's interests. Maybe NC State would like to get out to escape the long shadow of UNC, but I'd have to imagine that the other three are pretty thrilled where they are.

Would anybody outside of Texas watch?

NC State and VT make the most sense to me.

No...
