I don't think that is the case. The scenario he laid out is not one where a 2-3 loss team wins the conference. Georgia has a single loss and would be the SEC champion with a single loss. No, their resume would not feature as many high level wins as Bama (at least by rank) and their loss would not be as strong, but then, they'll have also beaten the team that beat Bama. However it stacks up, my bet would be that if you looked at two teams from the same conference and each had one loss, the one that won the championship is going to get in over the one that didn't even play in it.

 

Is your opinion that they would put Ole Miss and Bama in the playoff over the SEC champion with an equal number of losses?

Let me clarify that I think they will put 4 conference champs in.

 

But to answer your last question for discussion purposes, no. If Georgia wins the SEC with one loss they go in over a 1 loss Ole Miss/Bama/Miss St that didn't play in the title game. My main reason is if Georgia wins the SEC title with 1 loss I think they are the best team. I think Georgia is as good as any team from the west. I think they just got caught napping against SC.

The type of scenario that could allow for 3 SEC teams.

 

UGA beats an undefeasted MSU/Ole Miss team in the SEC title game. The MSU/Ole Miss left out of the SEC title game's only loss was to the other.

 

From my understanding there is no criteria the committee members are to use when selecting the four teams. One person may look at margin of victory and weigh it heavily, some may only want a conference champion, one may go with the eye test, etc.

If you don't think that $$$$ and ratings has a play in this, IMO opinion you are not living in reality. If you want nobody north of the mason dixon line, and west of the Mississippi to watch, go with a scenario of three SEC teams. I live in Ohio, I certainly would not watch it. I'm a B12 fan, but don't see how my conference gets a team in. That said, again Notre Dame is Notre Dame. They are a national draw. They win out, they are in. FSU is in if they don't lose. ONLY way three SEC teams make it is if every other conference has no team with 1 loss or less. I would certainly think that 2 teams from the SEC make it IF Georgia wins the SEC conference champ game. Yes, a 1 loss Michigan State team gets in over a 1 loss SEC team that does not play in the champ game.

SEC will get 2 a year and they should but a third is the issue.

And truthfully I don't disagree but the committee has no criteria when picking the team, Condoleeza Rice is on the committee and I think trying to be fair or politically correct will win out when deciding who goes to the playoffs.

 

If the rankings at the end of the year look like this:

 

1. Mississippi State

2. Florida State

3. Mississippi

4. Georgia

5. Notre Dame

6. Alabama/Auburn

 

then I feel like Mississippi State, FSU, Georgia and Notre Dame will be in the playoffs. Georgia and MSU will be rewarded for making the SEC Championship game.

 

IMO with those top 6 teams I'm taking MSU, FSU, Ole Miss and Bama/Auburn winner for my 4 team playoff but I'm not on the committee to make it right.
