These teams from Lexington and Louisville may be more athletic than you, but more often than not, you guys shoot much better. Use that to your advantage.

 

Shooting in a highschool gym compared to shooting in Rupp is not the same.

 

But I agree with most of your other points.

regular season competition makes the difference, no excuses.

It looks like the 15th is the only mountain region with a winning record in the sweet 16....

12th Region - lost by 24

13th Region - won by 14

14th Region - lost by 37

15th Region - lost by 19

Another piece of advice to add to Jim Schue.

 

During the regular season schedule tougher competition and dont worry about taking some beatings. Sure you will have to take some losses earlier, but in the long run it will help.

 

I think this is the one key to why SL has made their climb up the KY HS Basketball ladder.

That's because they venture out of the mountains frequently to play the best competition in the state to make sure there's no shock and awe once they get to Rupp. And they are only in their first year in the 13th.

It wasnt in his orginal post, and I posted before reading the entire thread.

I dont believe the talent is down any in the mountains. IMO some of the top players in EK could play a role and sometimes even star on some of the more elite teams in the state. Most the time a mountain team that wins their region is composed of a team of one or two good players and then 3 role players. Most state championship teams have 5 solid players that can star at anytime and even take over a game if the oppurtunity occurs. Its not that the mountains dont have close to the same number of talented athletes in each region in a given year its just that there are more smaller schools in the mountain and less combined schools with large enrollments and the talent is more spread out. Normally IMO all five players combined from Mountain teams that could possibly compete and win a state title aernt on the same team but playing againest each other just for the chance to get to Rupp.

 

South last year had five players and a go to guy that helped win each game they played, no one man wins a state championship.

Mason had Lofton the 2 previous years and went so far because they had one go to guy and 4 more players that had to be guarded at all times.

Warren Central won it year before last because of their team play and the weren't dependant on one or even two players to pack them the entire game every game.

King Kelly Coleman was the team and because of it was beat out by (If i can remember correct) a good Carr Creek TEAM in the semifinals.

Looking back most of these teams had players that were good but wasnt surrounded by a strong supporting cast.

Take Perry Central when they had Ben Bowling. He went to Oak Hill and played which says a lot and if not for personal reasons could of played at a solid D1 school. They had a solid team but not 5 guys on the floor at a time that could take a game over on a given night or a given oppurtunity. One or 2 players that could play for anyone but in this game it takes 5 to win the big show.

The Expo Center with a goal placement background like Rupp, with the larger crowds and with the open atmosphere is a great stepping stone to getting a team ready to play in Rupp! Of course the teams have to still be talented enough, but talent comes and goes. Even Louisville with all the talent, doesn't always make it to the finals of the Sweet 16.
