The Brossart football program's four-year KHSAA mandated foray into Class 2-A competition came to a welcome ending Thursday night at Newport Stadium as our Mustangs dropped our sixteenth consecutive Class 2-A encounter, 36-0 to the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds.

 

The Breds scored on their first five possessions as the Mustangs defense was no match for the high-powered NCC offense, opening up by the final game margin in the first quarter and then playing scoreless football for the remaining three periods under the running clock. To our credit we were able to post ten first-downs on the night, and had a chance to crack the four year scoring column draught (197-0) with NCC with a field-goal attempt from about 30 yards out in the second quarter that missed.

 

NCC touchdowns were scored by Jacob Smith (2), Eric Anderson, and Nate Enslen (2). Ryan Hans was a perfect four of four on PATs, while Smith was successful on a two point conversion on the first NCC touchdown of the night.

 

The closest the Mustangs came to posting a Class 2-A victory was back in 2011 when we lost narrowly to Lloyd Memorial 32-27.

 

We will welcome a return to independent competition for the final two weeks of our 2014 season, taking on Pendleton County on Brossart Senior Night on Week Ten and Gallatin County on Week Eleven.

 

Next season the Mustangs will be re-aligned back to Class 1-A competition, in a district with Bracken County, Nicholas County, Paris, and Berea. There we will attempt to carve out a niche, where we can win a few district games and hopefully a playoff game or two in the post-season, while posting winning records and developing our program into a bona fide Class 2A program in which we will be more equipped to compete, should that opportunity re-arise.

Yes we do, HOWEVER, the Brossart-Pendleton County game is being played at Sharp Middle School in Butler, KY. It will be our home game and our Senior night - Go Figure!

I thought Lloyd had a very good chance of beating Newport but after seeing this game and knowing that Lloyd only had Brossart down 28-14 at the half I am starting to think Newport is a little better than Lloyd. NCC scored so easily tonight (and they are not an explosive team normally) and Newport scored easily against Brossart (and even Holy Cross did also) that either Brossart played their best game against Lloyd or Lloyd just was not ready to play or they are not making progress.

 

Either way I'm leaning toward Newport now in their game with Lloyd but it should still be a good game.

 

As for NCC they need to stay healthy and keep progressing. They aren't dead yet and those tough non-district games are paying off. Brossart good luck in the final two games which are winnable.

I hope Spencer is ok, the kid has a tremendous upside.

Three things I got from this game.

1. NCC coaching staff was very classy with the handling of this game.

2. NCC players were focused and did what was expected of them.

3. Brossart kids played hard to the zero's.

At first I thought it might be money. But after thinking about it might be they just want people in the stands. If your senior parents are on the field and there are no visitors, you're walking across to empty bleachers. Closer to pendleton might help with that?

I'm not really sure about how this arrangement came about, but all of our games with Pendleton County since 2011 have been at Sharp Middle School, under a home/home rotation.

 

We have had Senior Night the past few years at Scott High School, where we play our home games. The way the schedule worked out this year the PCo game is our final "home" game, and therefore the site of our Senior night.
