Also, the obstructionist Harry Reid. He won't allow votes on certain bills passed by the House. My theory, he knows some of the Dems will vote for them. If you stripped away the romantic notions today's Republicans have about his name and looked at it strictly based on his positions, he wouldn't make it through the primary process.You are apparently living in an alternate reality, Jim. Conservatives do not control the GOP and moderates like Boehner, McConnell, Priebus, McCain, Graham, et al. take shots at conservatives in the party at every opportunity. The only time that the GOP moderates who control the party's political infrastructure make a dishonest effort to portray themselves as conservatives is around election time. The hatred moderates like McCain harbor toward Tea Party favorites like Michelle Bachman, Ted Cruz, and Rand Paul is deep and it is hard to ignore if you are a conservative like me. Do you ever wonder why the early GOP primaries and caucuses are generally in moderate strongholds in the north like Iowa and New Hampshire, or why so many GOP primaries are open to Democratic voters? It is because that gives moderate candidates a better shot to get some early momentum and gain a leg up on their conservative opponents in fundraising. Pay attention to the formats that the GOP leadership will use for debates this fall. The last thing any moderate Republican candidate wants to do is stand toe to toe and debate Ted Cruz, a former collegiate national debate champion who also placed third in a global competition. The GOP debate schedule will be dominated by town hall and internet format "debates" to spare the party's favored moderate candidates like Chris Christie and Jeb Bush the embarrassment of being hammered in a real debate with Cruz. It is true that the grass roots of the Republican Party is very conservative, but the old money families that control the nomination and legislative processes are moderates through and through. Karl Rove, the Bush family, and their allies are the successors to the Rockefeller wing of the party. It is the same group that seized control of the party soon after Reagan's second term ended.

Note I used the word "control," not "influence," for the NRA and Tea Party. I'm old enough to remember when far-left groups did indeed greatly influence Democratic Party politics, and what we see today from left-of-center organizations doesn't come close to what was going on in the late '60s and early '70s.

That's very imperative to be seen as successful.I agree and it is one of the many reasons that Obama is widely seen as a failure. Reagan's agenda was simple. Rebuild our military, which was decimated by Jimmy Carter, defeat communism, and create the conditions necessary for the economy to boom. Reagan was convinced that the Soviet economy could not allow their military to keep pace with U.S. military strength. Some of his key advisers disagreed with him, but history proved that he was correct. It is too bad that the liberals that fought Reagan's efforts in the Cold War every step of the way, including Joe Biden and John Kerry, learned nothing from Reagan's example. Reagan was a masterful negotiator, a skill that liberals have never appreciated.
