Who are the leading contenders on the east side of the bracket?

 

Haven't checked their records, but off the top of my head these are some of the teams on this side of the bracket.

 

Walton-Verona

Middlesboro

Danville

Prestonsburg

Lexington Christian

Prestonsburg will be higher by season end and should be in BG.

 

One thing Prestonsburg does have going for it is every playoff game (assuming they beat Leslie County) would be at home. Danville, Middlesboro, LCA would all have to come to Prestonsburg during the region, and NewCath/Newport/Walton would have to come for the state semifinal.

I love NewCath, but this team is a year away. Unless something changes it just isn't there yet. That game against Newport was disappointing. I don't think that Newport is all that good. Their line is big, but does not fire out at all. NewCath got penetration, but consistently didn't break down on their tackles. Additionally, their outside kept getting sucked inside by either getting hooked, reacting late to the snap, or not keeping discipline. Add to that that the QB was a magician for the Wildcats. This has been going on consistently in the few of the games that I watched. On offense, one side of their line has been slow off of the ball and it hasn't gotten much better. I know the kids are working hard, so I am not blasting anyone on their best efforts. I just don't think that they are state championship caliber YET. Pretty late in the season though. I reserve all judgment until the Beechwood game. This is only what I've seen so far.

If for no other reason... outside of Newport I don't see anyone in their hemisphere in their region. It would take a shocking upset for them to not make the Semi-Finals. In my mind I have to give NewCath at least the benefit of the doubt that in essentially a single game setting they will have a legit shot to get back to BG.

 

With all that said, I lean towards Pburg ever so slightly this year. My biggest concern with the Blackcats is if they have leveled off on their potential. Lots of 3 year starters and "closer than it seemed it should be" wins over Shelby Valley and Pike Central make me wonder how close they are to their ceiling right now.

You are selling Lloyd and WV short.

Prestonsburg is the real deal. The only game I've seen in person this year was the Hazard and Prestonsburg game. They have solid line play on both sides of the and held Jones of hazard under 100 yards rushing. They have a very balanced offense and good running back and mobile quarterback who is hard to contain when scrambling because he is always looking down field but if nothing's open he will tuck it and run until he runs out of bounds or is stopped..

Man it is sad to read this thread for me...0-7 season even when you expect to be down is tough to get through.

I personally think Danville would beat Prestonsburg. Danville is a pretty good team this season, they just happened to play half the season without their starting QB.
