I am pulling for the Red Devils in this one. Mason had big expectations coming into the season, but have played very poorly against some average competition. Russell has been somewhat of a surprise after beating Ashland with the only loss coming to a good Ironton team. Russell will need to be physical and control the tempo of this one but I think in the end the Red Devils are sitting atop the district once again. Hope this is a good game. Last two games.

Both teams are still mysteries.

 

Mason County is undefeated, but their wins have been less than impressive. Right now the best performance on their schedule is a 2 point win over a 3-3 2A Newport. Their other wins have came against teams that are a combined 5-28 and ye 3 of those wins were pretty tight games.

 

Russell has played better competition but have stayed nice and cozy in their little corner of Kentucky. The Ashland win is the best, and arguably the only truly good win, either team has.

 

Both teams have feasted on lower tier teams from their region.

 

Based solely off Ashland having a good win and a couple mediocre wins as opposed to Mason County's lone mediocre win...

The realignment does look like 3A will be loaded even more. While I think Russell gets in a very favorable district they will be the school that travels the most in the new district, not really any built in rivals.

The realignment does look like 3A will be loaded even more. While I think Russell gets in a very favorable district they will be the school that travels the most in the new district, not really any built in rivals.

 

Looking at these two teams and their non-district schedules it would be very wise for them to find a way to keep this series going despite being in different classes.

When you factor in Russell's weak district they will need every quality game they can get. I know Boyd and Greenup are historical rivals..but neither one is going to help Russell get better and prepare them for a Belfry, Corbin, or Bell in the Semi's.

 

Now is the perfect time to put those rivalries on hold so they can worry about the bigger picture.
