Highlands Basketball vs. Highlands Football

Featured Replies

This thread easily could have been HHS baseball vs HHS football. Last I looked Ramey, Weyer, Martin, Jones, Hennigan, Whitford, to name a few all played frosh ball or higher at one point in time. Heck yeah football would love to see these kids playing. Man, that is 6 legit starters on varsity this year. Baseball is stealing their fair share because the kids want to concentrate on that sport. And I'm cool with it. What I don't like is when coaches of younger athletes persuade their players to play their sport and concentrate on it all year. That's a problem. It's not football fault that kids aren't playing basketball just like it's not baseball fault kids aren't playing football on the high school level.

It's at the programs lap to why kids aren't playing. Baseball fixed it with the hiring of JB. Basketball looks to have fixed their problem with the hiring of Listerman. Takes time. Football, well they just got rid of their coach and brought in a new one to straighten out that mess. Who do they think they are not winning State 7 times in a row. It was time for a change.

The kids listed above in Q's post, yeah could have helped the basketball program. Not sure why Ramey isn't playing anymore, but if Hoge plays basketball last year, no way no how he is the QB that he is today if wasn't working out everyday in the weight room and film studies. His goal is to play college football, not basketball. Griffey just doesn't have the desire to play BB. So no fault to him.

I ask, who else on the football team isn't playing basketball/baseball that should be? Who in the halls isn't playing? Again, you could ask the same question for football. And baseball. Maybe someone just trying to shine a spotlight where it really isn't warranted. Just digging I guess.

I honestly dont know nor do I care. I am sorry I even posted in this thread. Wow...all I said was that there are 2 kids Griff and Beau who would start IMO on the basketball court. That is a compliment to them and not to be meant to drag them down for not playing.

This might be a good time for the Q to get off this site, I have been debating it seriously the past year or so anyway. Some of the crap I read on here is a JOKE !!

Looks like I might have to be Boutros Boutros-Ghali and broker a "peace deal" between you Highlands guys.

I think this thread and the 'protection' of the football program (for lack of a better term) speaks volumes as to why such a disparity exists.

Just my $.02.

Protecting the football program? What the heck. Who at hhs is not playing basketball that should be? Hoge would help for sure. Urlage another body but skills had started to fall when he quit playing. The problem is this team has no size which is something you cannot teach.

Some of the football guys put together a basketball team last winter in some sort of Southwest Ohio Intramural league coached by none other than Pete Coughlan. This I had to see so I went and checked out a few games and let's just say while he is athletic and he could have been an above average basketball player had he stayed committed to that sport on some level, football is now his sport. So I would have to say he as well would have been just another body. It reminded me of Huggins UC days when guys would hit the weights hard but struggled with the game of basketball.

I still say had Listerman been the coach back when these current seniors were freshman I think a couple of these football guys would still be playing, however IMO even with those additions it would not be enough to compete with the NCC's/Cov Cath's/Holmes (basketball schools). Just is what it is.

On a side note, while the games were low scoring and brutal to watch it was pretty funny to see Brady Murray chuck one up whenever he got the ball, no matter where on the court he might have been. I'm sure the boys and Brady still laugh about those shots to this day.

Is it Saturday afternoon yet?!!??

Baseball has proven that football players can play more than one sport. It's also proven that the right coach can built enthusiasm and get kids out.

Zero valid excuses for HHS to not being able to field a decent basketball team.

Seasons do not overlap.

As someone who is a basketball guy but a football fan I'll give you an honest answer. Some will dismiss it but that is ok.

If you are a successful football school in Kentucky and smaller than Trinity and Scott County it is almost impossible to be successful in both.

Why?

If your teams makes it to the semi-finals or finals every single year( Belfry, Highlands are the main two that come to mind) then your kids who play both miss out on 6 weeks of practice - and not just in-season practice, pretty much all pre-season where fundamentals and conditioning are the focus.

Do that for 4 years and you miss the equivalent of 1 ENTIRE season.

That is close to impossible to overcome.

I am also a person that thinks a kid should play as many sports as possible, for as long as possible.

Youth basketball is also more important than football. The MAJORITY of schools just treat youth basketball as an after thought or a money maker, PERIOD.

There is a reason that not to many successful football schools below actually 5A numbers win both state titles and region titles.

Didnt NCC have some pretty good basketball teams when their football teams made deep runs into the football season?

Didnt NCC have some pretty good basketball teams when their football teams made deep runs into the football season?

How deep and for how many years?

I'm not saying it can't happen, but it is not the norm.

Johnson Central is the most complete athletic program in the 15th, but they are the biggest school by a large margin and most of their basketball players do not play football. They also don't win football state titles like Belfry and Highlands.

Didnt NCC have some pretty good basketball teams when their football teams made deep runs into the football season?

And how many of their footballers were major contributors to the basketball team other than Highchew?

Something else to consider for Highlands. How many schools in NKY have about 75% of their contributors and 60% of their projected starting lineup on the gridiron? Of those that do have this scenario, what team would be the best in your opinion?

As many have said on here already, the football program is what it is and will be that way for many years to come. The baseball team has made great strides by hiring someone that took great pride in putting the program back on the map. Also does not hurt to have several classes of kids that have some baseball talent in the program, some of which play multiple sports and some who focus on baseball. The basketball team is headed in that direction as long as Kevin Listerman stays the course. He has held the kids accountable and worked with the football staff to make sure that those kids who want to play both can and do get to practice. If nothing else, these practices enable the kids to have a ball in their hand which certainly beats the alternative of not having them anywhere near a gym until the first week of December.

Guys it's 2014 - not the 80's, 90's, or even the early 2000's. The teams that are the best in basketball have YEAR ROUND BASKETBALL PLAYERS. They play AAU as soon as the high school season ends, they attend open gyms all fall, and go full force with their school teams on October15th.

HHS has ZERO year round players in their junior and senior classes. Some because they play football, some because they play baseball, one because he is a 3 time regional champion golfer, and some because they play both football and baseball. It is amazing to me that in today's basketball climate that these boys are as competitive as they are. Not top ten in N KY by any means, but surely better than decent.

Just to further my point - Can anyone tell me which team in N Ky that will compete for a regional championship has the most players that will contribute at the varsity level that do not play basketball year round? or has the most players that will contribute that play football?

( teams that I would consider NCC, CovCath, Holmes, Dixie, Cooper, Campbell County)

If you are at school that has that kind of success in football, you have to embrace it and roll with it. It is not easy and takes some pride swallowing but trust me, being at a school with great success is way better than being at a school with little to no success in anything.

Winning cultures are hard, VERY HARD, to grow and nurture.

I don't know your situation, but the "I don't have the time" excuse is used in many public grade schools. Do you think all the coaches at a place like St. Joe's "do have the time".?

No, they just make the time.

I'm talking about running a league. I've coached plenty of teams. In fact, I did Law School while coaching football and basketball, that was on top of working 50+ hours/week and raising a family. That is easy. Running a league is not.

In terms of impact players??? NewCath w/ Pangallo doing more baseball over the summer than traveling bball and McDonald golfing in the fall. I don't know about the Moeves brothers. Freppon plays soccer.

Beau would play and possibly start in time. Griff on the other hand would definitely not start and could possibly not play much. You have to remember that neither of these kids have played organized ball since 8th grade.
