CentreRocks Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 7th Region has 5 of the top 18 teams in the state!!! Trinity, the 6th ranked team in Region 7 would be ranked accordingly in the following Regions: Region 1: 1st Region 2: 1st Region 3: 2nd Region 4: 1st Region 5: 3rd Region 6: 3rd Region 8: 2nd Region 9: 3rd Region 10: 2nd Region 11: 4th Region 12: 1st Region 13: 2nd Region 14: 1st Region 15: 1st Region 16: 1st
moecat Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 That's great....I guess the question is how are they still ranked that high with all thier losses. I know they have played a strong schedule and been in most the games. But the bottom line is they have lost nearly as many as they have won.
cshs81 Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Being ranked 3rd in the 9th doesn't make them a top-tier team IMO.
mcpapa Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Gee, the Louisville paper has a Louisville team ranked higher than maybe someone else would have them ranked? Stop the presses!!!
CentreRocks Posted March 7, 2006 Author Posted March 7, 2006 Being ranked 3rd in the 9th doesn't make them a top-tier team IMO. The point of my post was to illustrate how weak some of the Sweet 16 teams are going to be, and that's assumming the favorites win out.
mcpapa Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 The point of my post was to illustrate how weak some of the Sweet 16 teams are going to be, and that's assumming the favorites win out. And that's precisely the beauty of the Sweet 16.

CentreRocks Posted March 7, 2006 Author Posted March 7, 2006 And that's precisely the beauty of the Sweet 16. I guess the phrase "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" never rang more true.
EastSideJunkie Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Gee, the Louisville paper has a Louisville team ranked higher than maybe someone else would have them ranked? Stop the presses!!! Actually, the Lexington paper has Trinity ranked higher than the Louisville paper. Imagine that. In the Cantrell ratings, Trinity was ranked either 16th or 17th.....
Jim Schue Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 The point of my post was to illustrate how weak some of the Sweet 16 teams are going to be, and that's assumming the favorites win out. That's really no different this year than any other.
CentreRocks Posted March 7, 2006 Author Posted March 7, 2006 That's really no different this year than any other. So just about every year, the 6th place team in Region 7 would be the best team in SEVEN other regions?:scared:
Jim Schue Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 So just about every year, the 6th place team in Region 7 would be the best team in SEVEN other regions?:scared: Maybe not seven, but a lot. The 12th has been in a down cycle, as has been the 13th. Were SL still in the 12th, T would not be tops there (but would in the 13th). Plus, I think it is important to note that they would not be head-and-shoulders up on the 2nd and 4th, where perrenial top-20 teams (UHA, Warren Central) reside. And with UHA not making it to region you're not getting a true read, because they would be rated higher than the other 2nd Region teams. But, the bottom line is that by comparison the to the 7th, most other regions fall painfully short, and those regions are usually 1, 14, 15, 16, with a couple others salted in on occasion if there's not a clear favorite. And it's important to note that we are talking about a pretty thin margin. (I hope that makes sense)
mcpapa Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 What rankings do you prefer? I'll use any that you want. According to the latest Massey ratings, Trinity, the 7th-rated team in Region Seven, would be ranked as follows: Region 1 - second (behind Graves County) Region 2 - second (behind University Heights) Region 3 - second (behind O'Cath) Region 4 - second (behind Warren Central) Region 5 - third (behind E'Town and John Hardin) Region 6 - third (behind PRP and Doss) Region 7 - seventh (behind Male, J'Town, Ballard, Eastern, Fern Creek, and St. X) Wait a minute while my fingers cool down after that last burst... okay, ready to go again... Region 8 - second (behind Shelby County) Region 9 - fifth (behind CovCath, Highlands, Holmes and Cov Holy Cross) Region 10 - third (behind Pendleton County and Mason County) Region 11 - eighth (behind Scott County, Lexington Catholic, Henry Clay, Bryan Station, Madison Central, Tates Creek and Lafayette; and I haven't heard a bunch of folks from Lexington crying on this thread) Region 12 - first Region 13 - second (behind South Laurel) Region 14 - first Region 15 - first Region 16 - first So, yes - there are other polls out there besides those promulgated by the Courier and the H-L. Some of them are even scientific. If I want to watch several Louisville basketball teams in the same tournament, I'll watch the LIT. If I want to watch the hottest team from each region in the state at tournament time - whether or not they measure up to the big bad 7th (and especially the big bad 11th); I'll watch the Sweet 16. Yes, there are more quality basketball teams in Louisville than there are in Carr Creek. That doesn't mean that the Sweet 16 needs to be re-vamped to allow the top-ranked 16 teams to play, to the exclusion of traditional regional champions.

The problem though is that I am comparing the 6th place team in the 7th region to the 1st place team in the others. I didn't even bother looking at the top teams in the 7th versus other regions, but I'll wager that margin isn't "pretty thin".

The Favorite to Win: Region 12 Region 14 Region 15 Region 16 and... Ranked Second in: Region 1 Region 2 Region 3 Region 4 Region 8 Region 13 Wow! Thanks for the eye opener mcpapa!:thumb:
