All teams are invited to the big dance in KY it's called district tournaments.

Wonder why the NCAA went away from that format? TV?

7th Region has 5 of the top 18 teams in the state!!!

 

Trinity, the 6th ranked team in Region 7 would be ranked accordingly in the following Regions:

 

Region 1: 1st

Region 2: 1st

Region 3: 2nd

Region 4: 1st

Region 5: 3rd

Region 6: 3rd

Region 8: 2nd

Region 9: 3rd

Region 10: 2nd

Region 11: 4th

Region 12: 1st

Region 13: 2nd

Region 14: 1st

Region 15: 1st

Region 16: 1st

So the 4th, 12th, 14th, 15th and 16th Region teams are already gone.

I find this thread very intriguing. I am not taking anything away from all the research that has been done with the rankings to demonstrate the parity among regions. I totally agree there is alot of parity. I also agree that the winner of the Sweet 16 isnt neccessarily the "best" team, at least on paper, in the state. However I do think that the winner of the state tourney is the state champion and the "best" team on the court, if not on paper.

 

The Sweet 16 isnt about who is the "Best" team on paper, or the most TALENT laden or ATHLETIC team, or the teams that are ranked the highest. If it was we would take the top 20 ranked teams and let them square off. But it isnt.

 

It is about a team winning (in most cases) every district tournament game, every region tournament game, and every sweet 16 game. That is something like 9, 10, or 11 straight games with each game being do-or-die, and most all of them being played in a rocking environment. Can someone say pressure.

 

That is no easy feat. Sure you have to have alot of lucky breaks and you have to have the ball bounce your way a few times. But does anyone else besides myself understand how INCREDIBLY HARD it is to win the basketball state championship with all that pressure on such a big stage.

 

I dont hear anyone saying that the NCAA Boys Tournament is a joke because alot of smaller, mid-major schools are allowed in, while their are a ton of teams ranked ahead of them, or more talented then them playing in the NIT.

 

Every team in this state has a shot to win the title, and that is all they can ask for. If they wanted to be in the Sweet 16 then they should have won their region. Dont water down the validity of the state championship because alot of good teams are left out. No good teams are left out, everyone gets a shot starting with the district tourney.

So the 4th, 12th, 14th, 15th and 16th Region teams are already gone.

Thanks. I had mistakenly omitted the 2nd region team.

 

That now leaves only the 1st Region from the seven (7) Regions (1, 2, 4, 12, 14, 15 and 16) respective champs who would have been ranked 6th in the 7th Region.

I think it is a valid point. Obviously, teams from these respective Regions will disagree.

These things happen. Often Male, X, Manual and PRP will have by far the roughest District the state in football. When the winner staggers out of the district they are so worn down and beaten up it is hard to win it all. Just this past year Male, Manual and PRP could have complained about their seeding/bracket/district/region. They didn't.

Let me begin by saying that CR has a point because football has classes. There are four championships. In Basketball there is only one. and really only sixteen teams can play for it. There is a very good chance that the second best team in the state doesn't even get a chance to compete in Lexington. I would bet that the sweet sixteen would be a much better tournament if they played it among the top teams in the state not the sixteen regional champs. I'm quite sure Ballard, Male, Henry Clay etc. would offer more competition than some of the games that have been played. As far as complaining about "retooling" the sweet sixteen, how many times have they "retooled" the football playoffs?

Is it fair that the majority of your best teams are located in Lexington and Louisvile, and therefore centralized in just a few regions. NO! But if those teams are truly and undoubtedly "the best" then the representative of those regions should win the championship every year...... but they dont! That is what makes the Sweet 16 unique. The teams just don't represent their schools, they represent their region. If you had the top 16 teams in the state, it would be 90% Louisville and Lexington teams. The Sweet 16 matches up different styles of play that provide for exciting games. Playing in a region like the 11th may be difficult to get out of but it prepares the team that does make it even more than any other.

Why don't we have a tournament where the top 24 teams (as rated by the polls) are invited. We'll play three rounds of elimination, and when we get down to the last two rounds, if any of the four highest rated teams going into the tournament have been eliminated, we'll just add them back into the field. When we get to the championship game, if the team that was rated #1 or #2 aren't in it, we simply add them back to the field... We'll just keep this up until we get it down to the #1 rated team versus the #2 rated team, and then we'll know that the two best teams are playing for the championship. If the #2 rated team can pull the upset, we can simply replay the game, until we get the desired outcome.

 

All we have to do is make certain that if a highly rated team is eliminated, we simply keep putting them back in. Why haven't we thought of this before?

 

In reality, the bottom line is this - if your team wins the games necessary, they will be the state champ. If they don't win those games, they will be eliminated from the field - regardless of what anyone else thought of them, or how they were rated.

 

As UKBellCounty stated, EVERY team in the state starts the tournament with an identical record. EVERY team in the state has an equal shot. At the end of the day, one team is left standing. If it isn't your team, too bad.

In a tournament (and I'm referring to the big picture of the state playoffs - not just the sweet sixteen), you can't choose to play the good teams last. If Edmonson County, Elliott County, St. X, PRP, Pikeville, or anyone else is going to win it, you have to beat everyone else in the state - or the team that eliminated them. In other words, you can't stand up in a bar and claim you can whip everyone in there - except the big guy in the corner. You either "call house" or you don't.

 

In my example at the beginning, if your team was rated #4 overall, and you got upset by the #19 ranked team, you wouldn't expect anyone to take you serious when you claimed "we're better than them and we should be invited back so that we can prove it". It's ludicrous.

I'm sure your tongue is planted firmly in cheek, but didn't we already do something similar in football? We created 4A a few years ago to expand the chances of a few that felt they didn't get a shot. Now we seem to be at it again in football, going from four to six classes. All in the name of leveling the playing field. I admit I don't know the solution to the sweet sixteen problem but it does bother me that a lot of teams get left out because their region has five or six teams that are some of the best teams in the state.
