Tony Soprano's fate revealed by The Sopranos creator

Featured Replies

Perhaps sick of answering questions about an event that happened seven years ago, Sopranos creator David Chase finally let a sliver of info out on Tony Soprano’s whereabouts at end of the HBO series. In an article on Vox, writer Martha P. Nochimson questions Chase on whether Tony dies in the finale. Chase’s simple reply: “‘He shook his head ‘no.’ And he said simply, ‘No he isn’t.'”

I never watched the show, but I hear people debate this all the time.

So it ended with Tony eating onion rings? Ok. I guess Chase now feels he can say this with Gandolfini being dead, but I will never think it was more than a tactic to leave open for the possibility of a movie.

It was an intense couple of minutes because you were waiting for something to happen. The two black guys were also in the restaurant that had nearly killed Tony a few years earlier.

So did you like the ending? The show as a whole?

Yes and hell yes. Why have you not watched this and you watch Bates Motel?

Bates Motel is great.

Didn't watch Sopranos because we didn't have HBO when it was first on & just never got around to watching it.

It's a slog to get through all seven seasons, or whatever they are. There are better shows to catch-up on. Half the reason I wanted to finish the series so much was to find out what happened in the finale, since it's referenced constantly.

It's hard to gauge accurately since it was so hyped up, but I liked it. It seemed clear to me that Tony's death was imminent. But I love that it gave people something to debate. (I hope anyone reading this thread knew by the title that there would be spoilers...)

Not my favorite but in the mix.

The Sopranos was my all time favorite series. Absolutely brilliant casting in every role. Absolutely brilliant premise. Absolutely brilliant scripting. I, in turns, hated and loved various characters, all so fabulously flawed. I really miss that show.

It definitely had inspired casting.

Loved the show and I didn't think he died.

Guess they can't do a movie now that Gandolfini has passed. I wonder if that was ever an option.

I was going to say this earlier, but I thought it would sound stupid:

Matt Yglesias ‏@mattyglesias: It's not up to David Chase whether Tony is alive or dead.

Isn't that sort of right? He obviously left it ambiguous and up to the viewer to draw their own conclusions. Does him giving a curt answer after years of being badgered for it really say much or change anything?

We had free HBO once for a month and I got started watching it and got hooked. From then on whenever the season would start I'd call and activate HBO and then turn it off when the season was over :lol2:

I love that Chase said he intentionally didn't wrap up the Russian in the woods and said that like in life some things go unresolved.

I finally got around to watching all of the Sopranos and wrapped it up this week. I'm not sure how I was able to avoid hearing the ending.

It's a good show but I'm not sure how some claim it to be one of the best shows ever. It was sort of tough to get through for me because I felt like it just dragged on. I was annoyed with the ending personally. Probably because I wanted to quit watching the series out of boredom several times, but trucked through and was left unfulfilled with them leaving it ambiguous.

Many shows I'd recommend before this one.
