At this point I think some people need to realize something. Seventh and eighth grader ARE high school eligible. That is a fact. Whether you agree with that or not is moot.

They are HS eligible, but not HS students......a HS student is eligible as well......so if you need to cut one eligible kid, it should not be a student vs non student......especially when one "eligible" player comes with a restriction that they cannot play against juniors and seniors from other teams......

I believe that you are right on the spirit of the rule, if a school only chooses to allow HS students on the squad than that is their choice and I have no issue with it.

 

I think where it becomes messy is when you allow the Middle School kids to tryout but then try to start making exceptions about what you do across certain grades. When it comes time to make selections, I feel that you choose the best players from those you have allowed to participate in tryouts, I do not care what class they are in or what school they are physically attending.

 

I have also seen the tryout process get messy when they change the "pool" that is allowed to tryout from year to year. I do not think this is fair to any of the kids, they should choose what their process is going to be for tryouts and stick with it.

I get your perspective.... mine is more about not cutting the better player just because they are younger.... I do not feel that you are even willing to consider another view on this topic.

 

You talk about the MS students coming with restrictions, if they are replacing a Freshman because they are actually better, I would not think that this Freshman would have been playing against Juniors, or Seniors, anyway. I guess it just depends if you want to use the word restriction, or limitations, to make your point on this one.

AS a parent of a former HHS soccer player, all I can say right now is that I am truly glad that we are no longer involved with the program. The former coach had his own rule that he wanted to give all interested freshmen the chance to play soccer. He did not cut freshmen to keep 8th graders, let alone 7th graders. KHSAA rule used to state that a middle schooler could not be on the field if a junior was also on the field. I have been told that has been changed to reflect that a middle schooler can not be on the field if the opposing team has a junior rostered (this would mostly pertain to the JV team). In my opinion, a middle schooler should not take the place of an interested HS player, even if the middle schooler is better. That student will have 4 years to shine. HS sports are just that - High School Sports. The percentage of players who go on to play at the college level is minuscule. The percentage who go on to play beyond college is almost nonexistent. High schools sports need to get back to where they belong. Girls/Boys playing for their school team and taking pride in that. As far as the misconduct of some of the HHS players who are screaming, yelling, swearing at their team mates, It is a poor coach who allows that to take place, especially if it isn't dealt with. As far as having a parent coach, that usually doesn't work well on club teams, let alone HS teams. It was very disappointing to hear of the coach selection. The current coach would be an amazing trainer. That is what he does for a living, and is very successful at it. I don't think the same can be said for his coaching of a HS Varsity team. And as far as his supposed personal issues at the moment…we won't even go there!! The fact that his HS Soccer webpage is centered around "INTEGRITY" would be laughable if it weren't so sad.

Can someone define a high level club for me please? What are the various levels of club soccer nowadays that did not exist for the upperclassmen of the many programs in the tri-state area? As far as I know, club soccer has been around for quite some time now so there is no advantage for the younger kids versus the older. The difference is that in high school, soccer is number 1 for some kids and number 2, 3 or maybe even 4 for others. For those that it is number 1, they are playing club soccer and for those that it is not they are playing on a select team with friends, teammates or other groups that they have met along the way. Some perhaps do not play at all in the offseason because soccer is something they like to do in the fall for the high school team.

Oh Gary your post started off with a good opinion then you went sideways. No reason to criticize a coach on here. Why don't you show some integrity and not criticize a coach behind a screen name and this website. I asked that this post be removed two days ago because of crap like this. Really did you just not go there? Again a few games in and lynch mob! Work at your craft life isn't fair. If you have middle school players better shame on you. Any player worth it's weight measures skills against there peers. Let's just reward somebody for being in high school. If you are gut so be it. This thread should be closed.

I miss the old days before this site when you kept your opinions like this to yourself because if you didn't you would have to face the person you were taking about. Good conversation and debate about a team or a sport is great. Personal attacks could have lead to someone shutting your mouth for you back in the day. I know if I was a coach listening to this I would probably loose my job because someone would be answering for these comments. Basically if you had a problem with me come say it to me.
