Coaches Girls preseason poll

If they do NOT cut HS students and have middle school students on the team, then the coach has the right to put his best team on the field.....if that means a HS sits while a middle schoolers play...so be it.....BUT....and those that know me, it is a big BUT....if you cut one HS player, that means you do not need middle schoolers to give you numbers to field a V or JV team and they should not be allowed.......

You're saying a player has the right to be on a team just because they are an upperclassmen, and the coach shouldn't keep middle schoolers and cut upperclassmen even if said coach thinks the middle schoolers are better players and can help the team. Interesting. I never saw a spot on a roster as a right.

I am saying that STUDENTS of the school, have the right to be on a roster before NON STUDENTS of THAT school.. Roster spots among STUDENTS are earned.

Middle school students have been playing high school sports for years. Of course when they do they are taking a 9-12th graders spot on the team. Who cares? Talent over grade level if the players maturity can handle it. Have you really been trying to argue this for over 20 years. Get over it, KHSAA did years ago.

Doesn't mean it is right......sounds like you may agree.....KHSAA allows middle school players to try out because some schools need the younger players to "supplement numbers" so they have enough to field a team. Supplement.

Why not just bring in entire middle school aged club teams and call them a HS team and not let any HS students even try out?

C'mon, really? If you believe that KHSAA allows middle schoolers to play to field teams then I also have a piece of ocean front property in Arizona to sell you. 22 years ago Highlands girls basketball team had plenty of girls players to field a team on all levels but for some reason Jamie Walz was playing Varsity???? Reason? Because she was better than most if not all the other players. KHSAA received so much pressure from high schools to bring up younger and more talented players that they gave in. They may say it's to supplement teams but we all know that is not the case. It started years ago with basketball and baseball and now it's soccer. Why? It's because the younger kids have had more exposure to the game with high level clubs that were not around years ago. Just face it. Some of these upperclassmen were not given that advantage. There are probably some 7th and 8th graders that are better players than most varsity members on the roster. Is the maturity there no but their talent is undeniable and that is why they are playing frosh. Let's put it this way.....Hey Emily, you have made the freshman team. Congrats. Have a good season. Emily is a freshman at her high school. What Emily doesn't know is that she was one of the last girls to make the team. What Emily also doesn't know is that there are 5-7 7th and 8th graders better than her coming up. Coach knows this. So when Emily is a Soph she comes to tryouts and gets cut because that incoming frosh class is too good to keep her. Now we have Emily upset and her parents are crying about her not making the team. False expectations would be set for those players who fall in this criteria. The parents complain and want the coaches head and start bad mouthing to all the other parents. This has been evident on this site before. "Old" times versus new.

Emily has the chance to get better....or to not. If compared to the other HS STUDENT Athletes, she doesn't make the cut. That is life. If you cut a Senior because a Freshman is better.....that is life.

Justify it anyway you want.....Students vs NON Students......Wrong.

You are completely dead wrong. Nowhere in KHSAA Bylaw 4, Section 3 is the word "supplement" used. Those are your words.

Because it would be hard to find an opponent that would let them get on the field under the current regulations for soccer.

Can someone define a high level club for me please? What are the various levels of club soccer nowadays that did not exist for the upperclassmen of the many programs in the tri-state area? As far as I know, club soccer has been around for quite some time now so there is no advantage for the younger kids versus the older. The difference is that in high school, soccer is number 1 for some kids and number 2, 3 or maybe even 4 for others. For those that it is number 1, they are playing club soccer and for those that it is not they are playing on a select team with friends, teammates or other groups that they have met along the way. Some perhaps do not play at all in the offseason because soccer is something they like to do in the fall for the high school team.

Soccer clubs 10 years ago are not the same as today. These teams are training 3-4 times a week at the u11 age group. There was not KHA Academy, CUP Gold, Crew Juniors, and OE. Where the clubs around..sure but not that level of training. Anybody that is involved with these clubs in a director role will tell you this. Maybe other areas of the country were but not in this area. If you watch soccer at all especially during the World Cup you would have heard them saying that in today's time these younger players are more skilled and knowledgable than years past. This doesn't mean they are all better but their development is at a higher rate for some of these players. If the club programs around here haven't produced more talent than 10 years ago then explain to me why the level of soccer in this area is better?

True on both accounts...Glyde...meant the " " to make supplement stand out ....should have bolded it instead of quotes........

I understand the scenario.....My youngest played baseball for another school as an 8th grader. No one got cut. He played in front of Seniors.....no one got cut. If they had cut, even one player, I would not have let him play. He then was able to go another school with no restrictions of transfer.......So I do understand.....

I would also point out that the 7th & 8th graders also would still have Club soccer available to them in the Fall, the Freshman would not. With the growth patterns of kids being wildly different around this stage, this would allow the kid to potentially develop or become more coordinated while remaining in the program. For many incoming Freshmen this is also an opportunity to meet kids coming from other schools and acclimate before the school year begins. The Freshmen team is about development and not about wins and losses. I don't recall the last time that I saw anyone publishing a lot of Freshmen game scores. It's a high school team that should be populated with high school students first and then kids from feeder schools second should a need arise.

What is allowed and what is right can be different things.

You have the ear of all these players and parents??? I think not. I have been at every game as well and I never saw what you supposedly saw. I believe he knows quite a bit about the game. What "other" coaches would be questioning his coaching or style? I would have to question their character. I will guarantee it's not a coach from another high school team. Maybe it's a club coach who thinks they know more than others. I frankly don't care. Who is the player that quit? I see no one missing on the field. Maybe your correct but I will ask my daughter since she is on the team. See that is what you don't understand. I try to listen to people's opinion on here and try to listen to what they are saying but when I hear crap like this and I have a kid on the team that see's things first hand then I have to question it. I am sure you would be surprised to know that he was Club Coach of the Year last year. Kings wanted him to take an Academy Team. I don't want to hear that it was because they wanted his players either. I have heard it all before. The style of play may not be quite adaptive for some of the girls on the current varsity roster but it does work. You are not always going to be the fastest team on the field but if you understand the 4-3-3 then there should always be support to cover lapses like that. I am not going to debate formations though. It is what it is. He is a new coach trying to adapt his style to girls that have never played it before. There is a learning curve. Didn't help not having one of the best players in NKY play club this fall instead of for HHS. As far as being out of shape...then every parent/player you have talked to should have been able tell you that he said you should be in shape when the season starts. The team themselves were having player ran practices. They did some running on their own. I don't tell my daughter to get in shape at practice. Please, I have her go run on her own and get in shape. That is a pathetic excuse. I think these conversations are quite amusing. Everybody acts like they know everything but really only know a few pieces of info. Classic for this site. I don't put up here say on here. If I don't know it I don't talk about it. If your facts about what is going on with the players and parents then why isn't something being done. After all this crap I hear, I am starting to wonder why he took the job myself. I would never coach in this town. You are praised by few and questioned by many. I seem to remember the boys parents running off Coach Roberts a few years ago. Vicious cycle if you ask me.

So you have a daughter on the Freshmen team, sit on the hillside by yourself or on fence by yourself and want to act like you know the goings on on the varsity team. You proved you are not in the know by saying you did not know a girl quit when that was a major discussion with all the parents and players for 3 days. You asked why isn't anything being done, good question, I know he is aware of all mentioned, at least 3 players/parents have gone to the coach, he is aware of things talked about on here! He did address the cursing of other players but not sure of the rest. Do I need to PM you names of who quit, who is cursing out other players, who talked about quitting, what coaches question his style of play? I will not do it here but will PM you so you are more informed before you call others post nothing but crap! Sitting at all games does not give you the inside goings on!

I know he was club coach of year, Does that make him a great HS coach? Like I said I heard 2 NKY coaches and 2 respected club coach question his style of play.

There have been other things too, I did not list everything for you, but I guess you are aware of everything.

The first post by me was defending Brian when he was wrongly accused of yelling at players in unprofessional way. I like Brian, but there is a lot going on and I also question his style of play like many others. As a coach he needs to set the team up to succeed, and many feel he is setting them up to fail with this style of play. Maybe he will have talent in 2-3 years for this style, but is that fair to these girls now?

"Maybe he will have talent in 2-3 years for this style, but is that fair to these girls now?"

I really have no skin in the game but having played HS and D1 across the river and a D license (not renewed- nor coaching) I'm curious as to how he would go about implementing a specific formation at Varsity without implementing across all three squads at the same time? - Not a rhetorical question. The only alternative for him would be to implement it at Fresh level then move it along with the age over next 2-3 years. That said, and not really knowing the specifics of the situation (formation or talent to execute) I would state most quality coaches would tailor their style/formation of play to the talent at hand and able to execute if purlely winning now was the priority. If building a program he wants he may simply be using this time to development of the formation himself and his staff along with training execution which all take time to mature along with the players executing.

Agree with this 100%. A coach has to have the Jimmies and Joes in order to execute the X's and O's. Some think soccer is cross country or track and that is what makes a good soccer player. Not the case at all. It is about controlling the first touch, being able to connect passes, moving as a unit both offensively and defensively, being able to position oneself in order to receive a pass, able to handle the ball with both feet and not just the dominant one, having a defender understand that you sometimes need to mark an opponent when they are in your area as opposed to allowing them to receive the ball, turn and face the goal and then attack you. Defenders can attack by being in the hip pocket of the offensive player and not allowing them to turn which often times will force the opponent to turn the ball over. Anyone that has been around the game for any length of time would know that these are qualities that above average soccer players possess and not just how fast they can run a mile or 800 yards.

Perhaps some people need to worry more about there own kids and not with what is going on with others because you never know what is going on behind closed doors.
