Lots of coaches win district titles, even some that have small enrollments. Not too many win regional titles. Not knocking the guy, just stating the obvious that until he wins a regional title, he shouldn't be above guys who have.

I don't disagree with your logic, however, the only way to judge success is titles or wins. In either case a coach at Augusta doesn't have a chance. He may be great but it's all speculation without the wins to back it up.

Seems to be true. Best players equal the most wins, usually. However, not everybody is talented. Sometimes a coach has to 'coach em up'.

Titles and wins are the easiest way to judge a coach; not the only way.

I was actually being a little sarcastic but they did have a 17 win and 20 win season while he was there.

Great question. I don't think the state title makes you the best coach. I think regional titles spread out over a period of time makes you the best. Winning several in a row with Chris Lofton is nice, but doing it again means more than if you just had one stud winning games for you.

 

To your second question, it depends. School size? community support? aspirations? I think any of the guys we've mentioned could win games anywhere in the 10th region, no matter the school. Could they win regional titles? maybe. However, they'd have a better chance than most others.

He's not won the big ones. Humphrey and O'Hearn have titles.

Augusta has something crazy like barely 100 kids in the high school (4 grades). Of which about 60 might be boys, and the economics of the community do not allow for many AAU participants. Just above most families in the communities financial capabilities. Yet he has about 30 boys in the program. With Bach and three sophomores last year they beat Mason for the second straight time in the district knocking the O'Hearn led Royals from advancing to the region. In fact, it would have been three years in a row, if a Bach buzzer beater had not spun out. Give Hinson a big school program and he would be another Donnie Tyndall.

Tough call because there are several deserving coaches. Hard to leave anyone out of (in alphabetical order) Carr, Code, Hinson, Humphrey, O'Hearn and Russell.

The odds are so stacked against him that he may never win a regional title. That's ok, not everyone can/does. But if we measure the quality of a coach, we often do it by winning the title. In my back yard, SK seemingly always wins their district and often advances to the regional semi's/finals but hasn't gotten past that mark in a long while. Because the school is larger, does that mean the coach isn't as good as a small school coach that does the same?
