Ok let's talk about enrollment. South was classed as 3a they opened with less than 800 students. Sure that number was low and south got a four year gift in 3 a no arguing that fact. Now for realignment. It's based on average MALE enrollment. In addition they only had 1' date='002 students last year Warren Central had 996. KHSAA released the average enrollment and south avg male enrollment was less than central during that period. I know for a fact that last ayers graduating class was only 242. And it was the first 4 year class. So if you average that they are 250 per class now them it puts them at about 1,000 students. But you still half to figure out MALE enrollment. That I am not sure of but it was on KHSAA website. Will the school grow probably will it move up in three years who knows WCBOE want the schools to be between 1,000 and 1,100 each.[/quote']

 

Your numbers are wrong at least as far as total enrollment. Last year South Warren had 1,104 students. Warren Central had 975. That's directly from this link on KHSAA (http://khsaa.org/reports/enrollments/20132014schoolenrollmenttotalsbyalpha.pdf). South Warren was only 16 students shy of Greenwood, a school that has been the largest in the WCPS for almost their entire existence. It's a sensitive subject for me and I don't want to dwell on it but the school board managed to completely screw up the only job they had in relieving overcrowding at Greenwood. Greenwood didn't drop enough and they and South Warren will remain large schools that grow. They managed to turn Warren Central from second in male enrollment in the district to the lowest - even below Warren East who they haven't been smaller than maybe ever.

 

South Warren listed 249 seniors so a graduating class of 242 sounds on the money. But they are still a growing school. There was modest growth in the sophomore class and incredible growth in the freshman class (330 students). They're not going to dip down below 1,100 any time soon and I fully expect them to be over 1,200 by the next realignment cycle if not over 1,300. The four year enrollment cycle is the only reason South Warren will be in 4A. If it was two years as it had been, they were in 5A with ease. And that is based on the male enrollment only. South Warren has been given a precious gift. Contrast that with Greenwood that was thrown to the wolves in their second year. I'm not saying apologize for it but it is a fact that due to the way they have structure these alignments that South Warren will spend roughly six years playing in a class where they unreasonably dwarf the size of the schools they play against.

The current system KHSAA has for new schools is imperfect. But the system they had when greenwood opened was not good either. At the time they opened there was only 4 classes and I believe but I may be wrong it was done on total enrollment.

I think it is completely fair and justified.... 100 students does not make that big of a difference considering statistically ony 30-40 of those 100 are male and only 5-10 of those males would even play football.... Both teams will be fine and both have strong programs that should do well in 4A. Who cares how big which school will grow to within the coming years. Whatever class they are in is the class they are in... Suite up and play ball.

Had the alignment been done based on the previous two years' male enrollment as the previous several had been, they would be in 5A. What saved them was that they decided to use the previous 4 years instead. Which means that the first two years the school existed were added into the average, years that are and will remain much lower than the school will see any time for years upon years - possibly ever.

 

I agree it's not perfect for new schools, and I think what you'll find is that while some were not thrilled with South Warren being placed in 3A initially while knowing they'd get larger, they understood. But I think a lot more eyebrows are being raised over this change in the process that will allow that to continue for an additional 4 years. It is what it is though.

Next year when they are reclassed will be fun to watch. They will be in a more even district from top to bottom and in 4 years if or when they move up will have them better prepared as well.

 

Everyone can complain all they want but the fact is it's not the kids fault nor is it the coaches fault. The blame is squarely on KHSAA.

I agree that it's khsaa...not south's doing! And I am a school that has been put in their district. As far as numbers do not matter...that's not the case at all. You have strength in numbers. Ask central who dresses over 100 kids. You think they are saying that 550 males or 345, and only 50 come out for team.. yada yada yada...Monroe has dressed 61 this year. That's huge for us, but I am confident South has more dressed than that, so larger enrollment means more possibilities for stronger talent! Either way it's still not south's fault that they were classified there, but it will be very fun for BG to have three of the five schools in the same district fighting across town for home field!

 

And I agree that south does deserve a top ten bid. Good defensive showing for them Friday night. I am so much looking forward to playing them in the weeks to come.

I would put Belfry, Bourbon and Central ahead of them, and possibly Corbin. I think you could make a case for SW to be anywhere from 3-5. I wish they played a little tougher schedule to judge them by.

Belfry is the only team that should be ranked above South Warren. Pike Central and Bourbon have bad losses to middle ranked teams in their given divisions. South IMO is 21 points better then both of those teams...

Bourbon's loss was to a pretty solid 5A team by 2 touchdowns. They kept it respectable and Warren Central is better than anybody South Warren has played.
