You are also sayng you are ok with giving kids plane tickets to get back home (where they should be attending school in the first place)? You are also ok with them paying for school etc. for players but not other students? Youa slo are ok with paying for housing for kids and their families?

You are saying things that I'm not saying by saying that I'm okay with them paying for school for players, "but not other students". I know lots of kids who go to Cordia probably receive need-based aid. I don't think it's fair that a regular student who is in band or on the academic team could get that, but not a basketball player.

 

I also don't care if coaches give players money, a roof over their heads, or clothing. How many kids across the state do you think are staying with coaches, teammates, or the like because their home situation isn't the best? It's probably more prevalent than people might realize. Like I said, some kids devote a ton of time and energy to the programs and can't have part time jobs that could provide support for them or their families who really need it.

 

Think about it, people are probably taking benefits because their alternatives might not be much better. I'm not going to pass judgment on that.

 

If a teacher had a gifted math or science student in their class who had a bad homelife (i.e., parents run a meth lab in the house, etc.) and they provided some support by giving them clothes, money for necessities, or made use of some types of resources in a way that could help them out, then we'd applaud that teacher, not condemn them for making the effort to help. That's all I'm saying.

 

If it's an entirely free market, people aren't suddenly going to start buying kids Lambourghini's to come win some High School basketball games. If they do, they aren't going to keep that wealth for very long.

 

It's not like we're talking about kid's families being put up in extravagant mansions or anything. We're talking about providing housing that many of the people who've chastised the program would probably turn their nose up at and be ashamed to have to tell acquaintances that they were living there if they were forced to move from their own homes. Not trying to knock what Cordia might or might not have, just saying that I'd bet there's people who are criticizing what the kids are getting when they don't understand the reality of what they perceive as a huge windfall.

It's the whole "help people out" myth that also gets me. Rhodes and the other adults responsible for this mess weren't setting out to "Help" anyone out. The only thing they cared about was if a kid could help their team win. Had nothing to do with helping anyone out but themselves.

 

If they were truly only concerned with helping out a kid who may have come from a rough background etc. then why didn't Rhodes go out an buy clothes for students who weren't playing basketball? Why didn't Cordia bring in a lot of other kids from Canada and Michigan and other places to attend simply for school?

 

Dont give me the "trying to help" garbage because you know as well as I do that if they didn't play basketball they wouldn't have gone to Cordia.

Criticize the Cordia community and say that they're selfish, etc. when they've done these same things for years and for plenty of kids who weren't talented, and that's what draws my ire.

Hahaha, thanks. I spend a ton of time on BGP and not just in this thread, but point taken. I do think it's good debate and if not for me and Lion Pride, the whole discussion would be about how everyone dislikes Cordia, but sometimes that's not really what it's about.

And the need based aid I was speaking of included money for things like cost of attendance, housing in their dorms, clothes, utilities for the families, etc. (as Lion Pride has mentioned).

If that is true, it's just another slap in the face of KHSAA and shows Cordia thinks they can make the rules themselves.

 

All I have to say is thank god my son attended a school and school district where coaches and the AD didn't feel they needed to cheat and allowed the kids in the school district to play the sports they wanted to play. I don't know how I'd react if my son wanted to play basketball and had to pray just to make the team and then sit on the bench behind 5 players who weren't even from the area. What kind of lesson does that teach? Sure doesn't teach sportsmanship.
