It was my 1st love, but it's to slow of a game for me.

I don't know enough history of the St.Henry baseball teams. Were they ever a power? Or a very good/dominate program before Otte and Grau? They haven't missed a regional since 2007 with multiple coaching changes (sure the district change has helped some). Can they be better...sure, but all teams want to be better.

 

Without getting involved in the coaching debate, or any of the politics that may be involved, I can likely answer your question/post.

 

St. Henry was never dominate in baseball, but has had good to very good teams over the years. The very good were pretty scattered in with the good. But, they had a nice run from the late 80's into the late 90's where they were pretty darn good year in and year out.

 

Of course it didn't get them any further than the recent teams have gotten. A trip to the regional most years, and an exit in round one or two.

 

That said, St. Henry played in a much tougher district during the 80's and 90's, so I think it took much better teams to just get to the region. I think the program has taken a step backward in the last five to 10 years, but it has not been a drastic step.

St Henry was in the 33rd district with Ryle, Conner, Boone, and previously Simon Kenton until 2007. They had some very good and talented teams in the early 00's (01-03) and mid 00's (06-07). I gotta believe if they played in the district they do now with some of those teams they would have won a lot more championships.

Someone outside the area may be a good idea for St Henry though.

I guess it all depends on what type of attention gets paid to the program? First time head coach could mean another carousel of coaches that come and go once something better comes along. If they have the opportunity to hire someone with no political ties that has experience, I hope they jump on it. Being a parent of one of the players, I really hope they shy away from an unestablished coach or a dad. Dads can be beneficial on an assistant level at-best, but never for a head coach. It has the potential to be a good solid program with the right person.

Considering Dixie has only one regional title in the last 15 years, it wouldn't have been that difficult. They are consistent. I will give you that. You can count on a 20-win season every year. Who does that really help? The coach mainly. I'd give up one of those 20 win seasons for a title any day. There was a couple seasons where it was close to thirty wins and they couldn't get out of the district. That's more consistent on the other end of the spectrum. I think not only Dixie, but the entire 9th region needs to do abetter job expanding to the rest of the state for more exposure.

As a St. Henry grad and former player, it baffles me that the condition of the ballfield continues to decline. Do we not remember Fox field, folks?! In fact, the Reds were supposed to host a fantasy camp game there this past Saturday but the game was rained out. I asked a St. Henry official how it could be rained out when the school has a tarp? He replied they never use it because it's too much work and they don want to run the risk of killing the grass if they don't get enough help to remove it. Sad.

That's another reason why I hope they hire someone with experience. It takes years to learn how to properly maintain a field and how to do it. Proof of that is how it has deteriorated during this carousel of coaches. As far as the field tarp goes, that's embarrassing. I've seen high school teams put-on and takeoff full infield tarps in under fifteen minutes. There's no excuse. I'm sure there are hundreds of schools that would kill to have that tarp. It use to be a prerequisite that to host a sectional tournament you had to have a full infield tarp, and I think that is originally why they got it. It has the potential to be one of the better fields around but you can't leave it alone for 7 months out of the year and expect it to magically be the same when you come back on it. Details is what makes great programs and details we do not have right now.
