NCC employed what Schneider called a "Rocket" defense (Base 5-3 with Jeff Brady following Fletcher where ever he went). I believe he had 14 carries and 13 yards in '84.

83 team had Fletcher also. Not sure of the yardage from the 84 game, coach wouldn't leave his game plan it seems and that worked to NCC's advantage.

 

I think in 83 NCC was ranked #1 and Somerset won and in 84 Somerset was ranked #1 and NCC won, with both winning on the others field.

Tim Jergens was the horse for NC that year at the running back spot. Jimmy Meyer and Mike Jordan also carried the ball a lot.

I remember stopping Fletcher was a whole team endeavor. But Brady definitely had quite a few tackles. Particularly remember a carry in the first series up the middle where Fletcher met two or three Breds for a one yard loss. Got the whole team fired up. A lot of gang tackling that night. The game plan was stop James Fletcher.

If JD is an 1984 grad, he would remember an 18 yard NC kick that went wide at Newport Stadium in November of '83. Heartbreaker.

 

Just might see my classmate that missed that kick next Friday at our 30 Year Reunion.

Oh what memories that picture brings back. I am the last coach on the right in the middle row.

I was on the sidelines as a radio commentator that night in the semi-finals vs. Danville. It was a hard hitting affair but that Danville team had a strong line and great backfield with Donnie Redd and Tim McDaniel.

 

I see Jackie Jewell and he was a great player for the Jumpers when I was playing for Boyle. From '79 to '84, Somerset and Boyle played some really great games vs each other. None of them settled until the 4th quarter. Even the blowout Jumper playoff win in '84 was a tight game going into the 4th when the Somerset talent took over.
