Throwback Thursday - Somerset Briar Jumpers

Featured Replies

This was the 1987 Briar Jumper team coached by John Cain. Got beat in the semi state by the eventual state champion Danville Admirals. There are a lot of good guys in that photo as well as a few BGPers

Former Madison County Superintendent and current Chief of Staff for the State Education Commissioner, Tommy Floyd is an Asst Coach on that team.

This was a little after my time, most of these guys were freshmen or middle schooler's when I was in school.

#34 is an ol' buddy

#34 Eric Jones was an eventual all state running back for Somerset. He was a sophmore in this picture.

The coaches from left to right are Jackie Jewell, Tommy Floyd, John Cain, Jeff Perkins, Mark Beasley, and Steve Sharpe.

Jumper Dad, when did you play. I may have played against you.

I believe he was a 1984 grad.

If JD is an 1984 grad, he would remember an 18 yard NC kick that went wide at Newport Stadium in November of '83. Heartbreaker.

And how James Fletcher was shut down at Somerset. Ejected at end of the game I believe.

I didn't play but I do remember every bit of that.

Fletcher was ejected the next year at Somerset. NCC revenge.

He wasn't the only one ejected, it was one of the most embarrassing moments for the program IMO.

83 Team had much better leadership than 84 team.

NCC probably had a better team in 83 than 84. Just like Somerset was probably better in 84 than in 83.

Too close for me to tell. I remember the Jumper's '83 defense being extremely stingy. But '84 team had the Fletcher running game.

NCC employed what Schneider called a "Rocket" defense (Base 5-3 with Jeff Brady following Fletcher where ever he went). I believe he had 14 carries and 13 yards in '84.
