Cooper/Simon Kenton 7 on 7

Featured Replies

So open enrollment would not benefit all schools in the district. You think it would benefit Cooper, but it could just as easily destroy Cooper if their best players left every year to go to Ryle, BC or Conner. If I am a kid and have the choice of what school to go to in Boone County, I am going to Ryle because they have a turf field and better facilities. Regardless of the distance of schools from each other, open enrollment in Boone County would create the haves and the have nots. Do you realize how many players lived within walking distance of Scott High School over the years and chose to got to Dixie or Simon Kenton instead?

If Boone County would have had open enrollment when Cooper opened, there is no chance kids would have chosen to go there over one of the established programs.

You don't know how open enrollment works do you?

You do realize the ones in each district would get first choice to stay at that school etc. and then there would be a limited open seats for the schools for transfers etc.

You would go to Ryle? Then there you have it, you see Ryle wouldn't lose everyone to Cooper, they'd have you :)

Yes. I realize this. So essentially, you think Boone county schools are going to be cyclical because they are closed enrollment, but if they had open enrollment, they would not be cyclical? All really good football players would fill those limited open enrollment spots and all of the kids currently at Cooper would stay?

All I have said is there would be differences and the Boone county schools ALL of them, wouldn't be hand tied like they are now when it comes to Football in the state or even in the NKY area. I made a post 2 years ago that it will go in cycles in the county because of closed enrollment. If it was open then there would be teams that could be better because athletes may fill roles on teams they are not filling at other schools. I know for a fact of a pretty good athlete at Ryle that wants to play for Cooper and would fill a huge need on that team. To think some teams wouldn't benefit from open enrollment is being quite naive.

When they built Cooper they screwed up, they should have just built a bigger school and merged the 2 (Cooper and Ryle)

I'm beginning to think that the quality of football in Boone County Schools has less to do with closed districting and more to do with a lack of financial commitment. Have the facilities improved much at Connor or Boone in the 50 years they have been open? Have you compared the facilities at a BC school with KC or even CC now? Not even close.

Has nothing to do with financial commitment. Kenton county recieves $9 million more in school taxes than Boone yet has less High Schools. Boone has always been strapped financially and hasn't ever hurt them as far as quality of football in the past. The reason CC and Kenton facilities are much better is simple...they get more money from the state and have less schools to divide it with.

What hurts Boone county is simply more schools dipping into the pool of athletes makes the product overall watered down.

The talent is on par in Boone as with Kenton or Campbell, you can simply watch the all star games the last 2 years and see that for yourself.

Not naive at all, I realize some teams would benefit from open enrollment. Also, some teams would be decimated by open enrollment.

We do agree that BC should have added on to Ryle, but as a school district, the objective is to provide kids with opportunities. Adding a school gives more kids opportunities than creating a super high school.

I am in favor of open enrollment within school districts. Do not see why districts close themselves. But if one school benefits that usually mean another school is hurt by it.

Also, the question that needs to be asked is at what point should a school be split? At what point is enrollment to big? If Ryle and Cooper were combined (using current enrollments) their enrollment would be pushing 2900 students. I know when you say they should have been combined that would have changed the districts sending more kids to Conner and Boone but that would make the Cooper/Ryle school one of the biggest in the state. I do not know if their was really a need for a fourth school but before Cooper opened the other schools were at or above capacity. They probably should have expanded the schools if possible (although Boone looks pretty landlocked). But Boone County is one of the fastest growing counties in the state. A fourth school was going to be needed eventually. Maybe the BOE thought they were better off doing it earlier rather than later.

So without looking at numbers, Campbell County, has around 750 boys within their district. Boone County, Ryle, Cooper and Conner have around 2700 boys combined. That means Boone County schools has almost 4 times as many boys. That means on average, they should have about 4 times as many athletes too, right?

On the flip side, a lot more kids are getting an opportunity to play football at the high school level. All four schools will be 6a. While it may be spreading talent, the fact of the matter is, these are all still pretty big schools, with large enrollments. There was and is a need for 4 schools in Boone county, based on enrollment numbers.

You can have more playing but instead of concentrating the best athletes at 1 school or 2 schools (Highlands and NCC) you spread them around to 5 schools (Don't forget Walton Verona).

You bring up a great point about the money though, you see how many students Boone Co has yet they recieve a lot less than Kenton County does. Something is broken with school taxes in the state.

The Boone county school district has had a growth of around 350 boys at the high school level in the past 6 years. Cooper maybe could have been placed a little differently but after looking at the numbers it was probably needed. But Ryle has more boys than it did before the opening of Cooper while Boone and Conner have about 200 less each.

The money for schools comes from property tax doesn't it? Is there that much more tax money in Kenton County? Remember there are 5 different school districts in Kenton County.

This thread sure took off on a tangent, and it wasn't even UKfan! :D

So is concentrating the best athletes to get the best possible high school sports teams to win championships is the primary goal?? I'd hate to see how many kids would get shut out of high school sports by having only 1 or two (or even just 3) High Schools in Boone County. And bottom line, is each school still has 700 or more (or will soon) boys enrolled, which is still a pretty sizeable base.

Campbell County has Bellevue, Dayton, Newport, Brossart, Newport Catholic, Highlands and Campbell County. That is 7 high schools and 6 school districts. Walton is not even in the Boone County School district. I am not following on that one.

I did not know about money, do you have any proof? Also, the School board can increase the tax rate by a certain percentage each year without requiring a vote.

the money comes from the state who divides up the tax money.
