Maggard was on 630 WLAP tonight and was asked about this. He said that he thinks the competition for the QB1 spot has caused Phillips and PT to become conservative in their decisions in an effort to not make mistakes in order to get the job. Makes sense. He said Drew makes what he calls the "courage throws" - those throws that are not easy but have big payoffs. We saw that in the spring game as well. I would think a choice will have to be made by Monday.

I'm not sure that is part of the criteria if I'm the coach. I am rooting for Towles or Barker to come out on top.

I don't know about you but I have grown tired of seeing all check down QB's for UK over the last 5 years.

I don't know about you but I have grown tired of seeing all check down QB's for UK over the last 5 years. I am so tired of this scenario. We are down by a TD in the 4th quarter. It's 3rd and long. We throw a 5 yard check down pass and punt it away. Never giving ourselves a chance to win. I like courage when the game is on the line.

I am willing to bet Neal Brown is as well. Down, distance, location on the field, time left, score, etc. should all play into the QB's decision on where to go with the ball. Sometimes it is better to check down and punt than throw a pick and give the ball to the other team on a short field. Take shots when they present themselves and don't force things. IMO, UK's issues on Offense have had more to do with coaching, system and surrounding talent, than who the QB was. If a courage throw is throwing into tight windows, I am okay with that. However UK over the past years who would always just take the check down rather than try to throw into a tight window. The best offenses do have guys who are willing to make that throw. Yes you don't try to throw a ball if a guy is covered. You have to have anticipation, timing and all that and it seems like over the last years our QB's have settled only for the check down throw no matter what situation. Then based off that story on how it seems like the other two QB's are starting to play not to lose now regarding the starting spot and just taking the check down all the time, sounds all too familiar to what we have seen the last years. I know I have seen enough of that over the years now with UK. Yes you need to protect the ball, but you have to also be willing to make that throw.
