Williamsburg was simply over matched last season and I think either Beechwood, Mayfield or Frankfort will win the 1A title.

 

 

Williamsburg did beat Hazard last year and lost less in graduation.

Williamsburg may win the East but I don't like their odds for the 1A title.

Mayfield-Frankfort-Beechwood-Russelville-Williamsburg My list is according how things played out in 2013...The 1st 4 are the Rough Side of the Mountain....The SEC of Single A

This is a year when everyone in contention will be "on a mission"

 

 

Mayfield...on a mission to leave 1A as the reigning state champions

Frankfort...they fulfilled phase one of the mission last year when they finally defeated Beechwood...this year, phase two...win the semifinals and get to the title game

Beechwood...on a mission to to get back to the title game, and in doing so break the losing streak to Mayfield...its their last chance before realignment.

Russelville...see Beechwood's mission

Williamsburg...on a mission to get back to Bowling Green to get the Cardinal out of their mouth...hoping to do what Hazard did in 2011

1. Mayfield - not because them being young in spots. I think they are the best defensive team in class A and rumor is they will be better than last year and that is scary. That will give the young guys on offense time to fit into their roles.

 

2. Frankfort - not going to under sale my Panthers. Return a ton of play makers of last years team. There could be a few bumps early as kid sadjust to some new coaches on staff. But come November they will travel to Beechwood expecting to win and that is half the battle when you play the Tigers.

 

2A. Beechwood - They return a lot of veterans and they are always well coached and play hard. They also will host Regional title game and that will give them an advantage. QB is a special player and have 2 running backs to go along with him.

 

4. Williamsburg - I think they are the best in the East based on how they perfromed last season and what they have returning.

 

5. Hazard - Should be back in the hunt from the east this year.

 

I will say the winner of Class A will be from the West again.

Frankfort has a legit shot this year. Mayfield will be #1 till beaten

1) Mayfield 2) Frankfort 3) Beechwood 4) W'burg 5) Pikeville

Last year or the last 5 years has little to do with this year. Mf is young and has a new young QB and OC. The defense should be better which is a plus as they were already solid. They will have the talent but only time will tell if they will be ready to do as others have done before them. They are capable but for now I would consider BW and Frank to be 1 and 2 or 2 and 1. I give Bw the edge given they expectations of their veteran QB. Snake said it best, we will know much more after the scrimmage and a few of our early David vs Goliath matchups with the bigger boys around us

Hazard should also be in the mix and maybe in Williamsburg spot or Russellville's

I think the first four spots are about right with Mayfield, Frankfort, Beechwood and Williamsburg. I think you could put 3 teams in the 5 spot and those 3 are Pikeville, Russellville, and Hazard. I give hazard the nod because several kids only played one way last year and got lots of experience and having a senior line for Brandon Jones to run behind.

I also think that Hazard is very good and could very well step in there as well

No one is listing Paintsville, I believe that the Tigers are going to be good this season, a lot better than some expect.

Also, No one knows who, if or how many WVA/OH. kids that Fairview will bring in nd/or how good they will be.

A coaching change at Raceland along with last years graduation losses,( practically the entire O & D lines, a 3yr. starter ay qb, a top rb) leaves a much smaller but still very talented but less experienced team. Don't be surprised if the Rams are in the running for a region title by seasons end. IMO Coach Salmons will step in and do a more than a very capable job, he has been an asst., O coordinator at the school for several years. Just has to adapt to being the Head Coach instead of asst..

 

Good Luck to (almost) ALL teams (just more so to my Raceland boys ) and I hope and pray that ALL kids at ALL Schools everywhere remain injury free.

That's a very good point. Only one starter returns on the line I believe. There is some strength, talent on the line that got some good experience last season when in the game due to blowouts. Now we have to see how far they have advanced and if are ready to step up to starting, playing when the game is on the line.

Any thoughts on if anyone's preseason thoughts have changed? I know it's early considering the real season starts in two weeks.
