I absolutely believe pit bulls can be every bit as docile and a family pet as any other breed, with the right training. However, the problem I see is, this breed and several others, require much more than the common obedience training and recreational handling training. And that training enforcement is daily, and never ends. Not many people have that sort of training. Nor do many even have much interaction with their dogs. And honestly, some people don't need to be allowed to own dogs of any type.

 

I don't necessarily have a problem with bans on the breeds, but I absolutely have an issue with cries to eliminate the breed. I think that we should look to maybe regulate the breed, restricting ownership to a certain type of "job", such as law enforcement.

Next door neighbor has one that is beautiful, it is bluish grey. Dog is strong enough to pull them any where he really wants to go when they are walking him. By most accounts he is a good dog and seems to be well mannered...but I don't trust him.

I've had 2 of my children bit in the face by a dog. One was a cocker spaniel and the other was a mix that had chow in it. One left a small scar and the other required 17 stitches to close up. Still makes me sick when I look at the scars on his face. I was surprised that no one contacted us about it to investigate the dog and the situation considering it wasn't our dog either time. Needless to say both dogs got what they had coming to them for biting my kids.

My daughter was bitten on the chest by my parents' border collie when she was about 6. She had leaned over Queen and her shirt covered the dog's head causing her to panic.

Also, I've had a lot of first-hand interactions with two pits in my adult life. Both are very docile and loving dogs. However, I would NEVER leave a child unattended with either of them. Just too much of a risk if you ask me. I would never own one either.
