May 22, 201412 yr Latos should be back in another week or two. At that point, a decision has to be made about the rotation. What do the Reds do with Simon? Outside of Cueto, he's been the best starter this season. Do they push him back to the pen? Do they send Cingrani down to AAA? Does Homer develop "shoulder fatigue" and have a stint on the DL? What say you?

May 22, 201412 yr This is a nice problem to have but unless he greatly improves in the next couple of starts a brief DL stint for Homer would be the best solution and then go from there.
May 22, 201412 yr There are several issues surrounding Simon. Obviously, he has been a great asset thus far & I'd like to keep him in the rotation if possible. With that said, consider Simon's career numbers. His career high for innings pitched is 115 in 2011. During his previous 2 years in Cincy, he combined to throw roughly 150 innings (61 & 87). He has already thrown 58 this year. In all likelihood, Simon won't be able to remain in the rotation past the all star break.

May 22, 201412 yr I agree with what CC says, but if the Reds think Simon can go more innings then I think you have to keep him in the rotation, and put Cingrani in the pen. I honestly believe Marshall is done, and the Reds will need another lefty, and a long inning guy.

I don't think Simon can last the full year, but he's cheap & he's been too good to take him out. Cingrani is the best option to use as a reliever.

I think Latos comes back and fills in at the bottom of the rotation and then moves back to 2 after the break. I say they will put Simon back in the bullpen and start Cueto, Latos, Bailey, Cingrani, Leake.

Very possibly, however I thought he had the reputation as having a rubber arm? I know he volunteered to go into the 15 inning game Monday night and still make his scheduled start yesterday. Either way, if I'm the Reds, I ride his right arm until he gives you a reason not to. My worry with putting either he or Cingrani in the pen, is once you make that move, it's awfully hard to stretch it back out again in the event of an injury. If they move one of them to the pen, and Latos or someone goes down again, now you're scrambling to find a guy for the #5 spot.
May 22, 201412 yr No matter what they end up doing the pen is going to get a lot stronger. If the starter can give you 6 innings you can go with LeCure/ Cingrani or Simon, mixing in Parra every now and then, and then Broxton and Chapman.

Second, I have never gotten the feeling that Homer isn't a team first guy. If signing a big contract makes him that, well given the opportunity, I guess there wouldn't be a single team first guy on the planet. Third, Homer is NOT going to the pen.

He may have a rubber arm, but you simply can't expect him to double or triple his # of innings and remain healthy/effective.
