I have no problem with trying it out at NKU. It will be interesting to see what kind of unaffiliated crowd attends at NKU.

 

WKU is not exactly centric, but it is when compared to NKU. I could see attendance taking a hit from the unaffiliated, but if a NKY team makes a run from Region 9 or 10 it could help offset.

That's the big question. Will the non-WKY schools who qualify bring more fans to NKY than they would to WKY?

The population triangle for the Commonwealth is NKY>LOU>LEX. Anything held within that triangle is going to get be better attended because there's a bigger population to draw from.

 

With that logic alone, the YUM! and Rupp would be no-brainers, and Louisville and Lexington would have been regularly hosting the event. But we have not seen that happening. I have wondered for the past few years if and when the BOK/NKU would make a run at this event, and now we it has come to fruition. The schools and teams in northern Kentucky are strong and have good traditions, but I've not noticed much interest or support from northern Kentucky regarding the happenings around the state in girl's basketball. On some other older threads, the lack of interest by northern Kentucky kids in recent years to participate has been noted, so we'll see if the fan turn-out counters that pattern. It will be a much shorter drive for many eastern Kentucky schools.

 

It's actually economic competition that is driving this, and we'll see how it goes. I cannot help but think that BG/WKU will come to wish for a "do-over," that they will regret the loss of this economic cash cow for the entire community. Historically, forward-thinking civic leaders have succeeded in "landing" the railroads, or building bridges, or constructing the interstate highways in order to boost their communities. NKU has done just that at WKU's expense.

I think this will be a fantastic opportunity and it is time for change. Not that there was anything wrong with the way WKU was handling it. Just a fresh change and hopefully a good boost in support for the Girls Championship.

I for one am very glad for the move. Yes, I'm in Northern Kentucky, but being able to possibly broadcast the games for the 8th or 9th region girls is much easier than having to take extra time off from the real job to get a room and making the hike to BG.

 

We already do the entire 9th Region Girls Tournament at the BOKC, so for a couple of years, we'll have a shot of calling the State games for our local teams in our own backyard.

KU certainly has great facilities, but if Louisville can't get the event and make it work, why in the heck is it in northern Kentucky (er, almost Ohio)?

 

BG is no closer for a lot of schools. Why NKY? How about fans decide to make it a weekend and not go home after eliminated? Plenty to do in Cincy/NKY when games are not on. Newport on the Levee, Museums, great restaurants. Obviously, it is a win for our region. Whether the KHSAA makes money is another story.

Bowling Green is only 20 miles from Tennessee. Louisville is across the river from Indiana. So being "almost Ohio" probably isn't a concern the KHSAA has.

 

Now, will casual fans travel to (and stay in) northern Kentucky? That will be the big question that will have to be answered.

Kentucky's biggest problem is geography. We aren't a square, aren't big enough to have one city with all the perfect venues (maybe Louisville...maybe), aren't small enough to where everything is close to everyone, and don't have roads going in all the right places to make any venue convenient traveling for all parts of the state.

Step 1. give everything east of Lexington/I-75 back to West Virginia.

Step 2. give everything west of Kentucky Lake to whoever wants it (keep the lake)

Step 3. Invade southern 3rd of Indiana (Bloomington south) and annex it

 

You now have the all-new Kentucky, roughly in the shape of a rectangle with Louisville in the center of the state. You also get 3 great college hoops rivals in same state (doesn't improve the college football situation however)

By far the BEST venue for the girls. Although not much to do in Frankfort, but the Convention Center is a great place to watch games, not one bad seat in the house and very up-close and personal.

....from my house to walking into the BOKC being less than 10 minutes, I like very much. Plus, I can be front and center to update every game for BGP. :thumb:

I'll be interested to see how things go for NKU and NKy. One thing to consider is how much of the entertainment dollar stays in state. In BG, people are staying in and around BG and doing things nearby. I'm sure there are a few that make a quick trip to Nashville because they're close. How much of the entertainment dollar will go to Cincy while the tourney is hosted at NKU? I don't know the figures, but the state will lose some money to Ohio. It would be nice to keep the money spent while not at the tourney in the state.
