Something seems very "off" about this whole story/situation.

Something is "off" about this situation. When Mr. Kidwell was "elected" Sheriff 18 months ago, he was essentially given a gift because he had been head of the Campbell County Republican Party. He is not a life long law enforcement officer, in fact he has no law enforcement experience. He has been a constable, or a process server (think Pineapple Express). He is a computer repair guy.

 

He intentionally attempted to mislead the voters in Campbell County by approving and citing an article in a law enforcement magazine that said he had 18 years law enforcement experience with the CC Sheriff's office.

 

Mr. Kidwell is a cog in the "good ole boy" system from CC politics and got caught with his hand in the cookie jar thinking the voters of CC were not smart enough to figure it out. When Deb Dixon gets on the case, you can bet it will be exposed on the Cincinnati news channels.

 

He has attempted to backtrack, but his FB page sealed the deal as he posted for everyone to read the article….his FB page and article have since been retracted.

 

I hope he has a fall back plan because I think he just found out what Ky politics are really like….

Kind of funny the police unions saying it's all about integrity. Got to love CC politics. It's always been about the race to the bottom around here.

It's funny that this is a big deal right before the primary since Jeff Kidwell has touted his "law enforcement" experience from the beginning of his campaign for sheriff. I didn't agree with his experience when he ran the first time and I still do not believe he has any true law enforcement experience; something I'd like my sheriff to have.

A constable is a peace office, and is in the same category as Sherif in the state of Kentucky. In fact, the constable, sherif, and coroner are the three most powerful law enforcement officers in the county. Most don't understand what a constable is, or sheriff, for that matter. The sherif is charged with serving papers for the court, providing courthouse security, collecting taxes, and other administrative duties. The sherif's office, over time, has taken on more of an actual law enforcement role in most counties, but that is not it's original intention.

 

Likewise, the constable was charged with serving papers and administrative functions of the now defunct justice of the peace court. After that, the constable has become a office that basically has little function, which has made it an office most don't pay attention to and affords some people to run for the office that probably shouldn't, but is a peace officer position mandated by the state constitution. The constable has requirements and functions that are almost identical to that of the sherif.

 

The origin of the word "COP" comes from "Constable On Patrol".

 

The coroner's office is likewise a very powerful, peace officer, position that, in many counties, is held by a funeral director. Many people don't realize the power of the law the coroner posses, if they did people would not be so fast to elect a funeral director, with no law enforcement experience, to the position.

I'm sure there are several stories of the origin of the word, I have heard the one you reference as well.

Agreed. That the constable position — a position whose sole remaining duty is to tend to the livestock castration needs of the local farmers — is still on the books is an example of how badly our state's laws need a major overhaul.

So what powers does the Campbell county sheriff have ? Also if he wasn't in law enforcement why did the lodge have him as a member for so long?

He was a county constable in CC for a long time…his real business was running a computer repair shop. There was a special election in CC about 18 months ago when the long time sheriff retired. It should also be noted that Mr. Kidwell was the head of the CC Republican Party and got the party nod for the position because of his long term "service" in that role.

 

I don't know that the issue is necessarily that he doesn't have true law enforcement experience, regardless of what the constable roles are, it's that he wasn't honest about it and it got published in a law enforcement journal. He promoted it and got caught not telling the truth about his experience. He is and has been part of the good ole boy politics in the county for some time and this just amplified his exposure. The Deborah Dixon interview exposes his inability to deal with the tough questions. He did not deal with it well and had a chance to retract his position and didn't.

 

He claims he is being bullied by the police agencies because he is infringing on their turf. I do not believe this is the case, they just think he's a tool who didn't tell the truth about his experience.

 

To his credit he did claim that he had been involved in some raids on some strip clubs and is certified to deal with suicide bombers, so I guess we got that going for us if we need it.

 

Should this guy get re-elected, I'm going to find the oldest cow on the farm and have him come out and put it down, then get him to bury it, and then let him collect his $3, as per state statute. I bet he sweats that one…..

He's a wanna-be cop and tried to pass himself off in his campaign literature as an experienced, trained law enforcement officer. This guy is a joke, and the FOP guys are calling him on it.
