What does Mayfield need to do to improve in 2014? What do they need to keep doing to be successful? Remember, please be constructive.

Mayfield will be in a rebuilding mode this season. New linemen, new QB, new running back and new offensive coordinator. I look for the Cards to be stout on defense but could struggle some on offense until they get set on everything. I think they are set for the next 3 seasons with Trajon Bright at the rb position and he should be a very good one. I look for Mayfield to possibly lose 3 regular season games this year but should be a main contender for the 1A title this last season before their move next season to 2A.

Mayfield is top dog in 1A until beaten by a Class A team.

This will be a tuff year for cardinal fans.

The defense will have to carry them early and keep them in ballgames against a very tough non-district schedule. Once district play rolls around, they should be battle tested and have enough games under there belts for there new QB and OL to get in sync and Coach Joe should know where his bread and butter lies by then. I expect them to lose 3 or 4 regular season games, most likely McCracken Co, Caldwell Co, Graves Co with games vs Ft Campbell, Tilghman and Murray being tossups.

 

When alls said and done, I do think they'll have a little better running game than last year and a great core of WRs to choose from. The biggest question marks are can the new QB throw the ball consistently well and can the young OL come together enough to give him time to throw it. The defense should be very good.

Could not agree more, as the old saying goes, "To be the man, you have to beat the man", in this case, Mayfield is the "man" in single A. They might struggle a little more than they are used to, but by the end of the season I am sure they will be primed to make another title run.

The Cardinal defense should be the best it has been in some time and the teams strength. On the offensive side things will be slower to develop. A new QB will take over and his development will take time but the running back position will be stacked and should help take a lot of the pressure off the new young QB. The 2 keys to a successful season in Mayfield will be the development of the offensive line and the obvious, QB. The line will have some new faces but most have a lot of experience and were actually good enough to have started last year. I think the Cards O line is going to be pretty good, make take a few games to get in sync but this is a pretty talented group. This receiving corps is also a plus as everyone but Jackson is back. This team should look a lot like the 2011 team that also had a young QB. The schedule will be rough early and could lead to a few tough losses but by the time the Cards hit the 1A portion of their schedule they should have things figured out

I think snake is planning a new hairdo, rumor on the streets has it he has narrowed it down between a Mohawk and mullet. I think we need to start a BGP pole to help him decide. I think I overheard him on the phone with voice trying to sway voice into doing the same up at Bw:ohbrother::lol2:

First things first, that's one more vote from Bbum for Mullet for ole snake

 

Offensively the Cards are going to use the same formula in their selection of a new QB that has worked with the Guhy Brothers. A sophomore is the heir apparent for the job. When I say same formula, this kid has same characteristics found in the previous 2 Guhy Brothers in that he is extremely intelligent and athletically comparable to the Guhy Brothers and has a family support group that has been willing to get him all the help from experts. He is expected to have his ups and downs though just like the Guhy Brothers did in their frosh and sophomore seasons. I expect it to be much like what we saw out of Jake Guhy in 2010. The key belief is the intelligence which with the Guhy Brothers translated into few mistakes, especially their Jr and sr seasons. The new QB will benefit from having Trajon Bright in the backfield, son of one of the all time Mayfield greats, Mike Bright. In middle school Trajon was simply "THE MAN", as a frosh, especially, late in the season, he grabbed everyone's attention. Many may recall his 95 yard TD run in the first quarter of the state title game last year. Big things are expected out of Bright and this will help the young QB. Perhaps the biggest, and strangely, quietist change for the Cards offense maybe the loss of our offensive coordinator, who resigned and moved to S Carolina. I expect Head Coach Morris to takeover that job, but this is not yet been said. Morris already had a large hand in the offense and was basically the co-OC the past few season anyway. The Cards line had some turnover but I expect the returning group to be pretty good and mostly already fairly experienced as there was a good amount of rotation there last year. The backs should also be pretty good with a bruising fullback and Bright should be the primary carrier. The receiving core lost Jackson to Murray State but it was a deep rotation last year and still loaded though Dillion Reed just announced he will be moving to Graves County where his step dad will be a new assistant football coach with the middle school.

Overall, the QB spot alone will make the offense less potent than last year but by late in the year this should be a pretty solid, though very young, group

So Morris is not the defensive co-ordinator? I always thought he was more a defensive coach than an offensive coach. I assume the offensive co-ordinator that left was the person that called the plays. You are saying Morris is going to take over play calling?

The defense is has and always will be called by DC Cliff Dew, considered by many out west to be a defensive guru and former head coach in MS where he is from. His name also pops up often for jobs. Morris has always had a big hand in the play calling on the offensive side and now it is likely (but not yet decided or if it is it is being kept to himself) he will take that roll full time which does not really change anything or than its always nice to have 2 thinking for 1.
