They are allowed to, see my post I listed the rule...I thought they could but wasn't for sure. I'm sure RCC just missed it, he may not know football playoffs or any thing about the All A but I trust his opinion on softball and agree with him on this.

 

I'm certainly not claiming to be an expert, and he's probably forgotten more than I'll ever know about softball. Aside from umpiring some 8 and 9 year old games 20 years ago, I know nothing. It looks like you and I posted at the same time, and the only reason I questioned the rule was because I remember seeing UCLA's first basemen wearing a mask over the weekend.

When our oldest daughter began pitching, we immediately MADE her wear a game face. She didn't like it. As a matter of fact, she was mad about it. And ask me if I cared that she was mad? Nope. Not one bit---in our house, kids don't decide important things like that. We did give her a choice...her choice was pitch with it or don't pitch---didn't wait for her to choose to wear it. The decision we made was in her best interest and if u ask her now, she'd tell you she'd never step on the mound without it because she's seen first hand a line drive to the chin (luckily with a game face on) It's a crazy risk for a girl to pitch without one. I don't care how many games someone's seen or been involved with...it only takes once and the result could be devastating.

 

It should be mandatory. They have to wear helmets when they bat. What's the difference??? Other than stating the obvious that one is a rule and one isn't

I think what I said has been misinterpreted. I didn't mean that you are a bad parent if your kid doesn't wear a mask. I meant that if you think your kid should wear a mask for safety reasons, and feel strong about it, but let your kid talk you out of it, then you are being a bad parent. Don't ask the high school administrators to make a rule just because you can't get your kid to do what you want her to do. Making everyone else do what you are unable to make your kid do is bad legislation.

I think masks are a good option that is and should remain available to those who choose to use them.

I do not believe KHSAA, OHSAA, ASA, NFHS or any other governing body should "require pitchers and corner infielders to wear a mask".

Nor do I believe a person is a "bad parent" or any other internet forum accusation/label just because they don't agree with your belief on the subject. I believe in personal freedom and responsibility, and acceptance of consequences.

I think everyone on this forum understands the difference between skill levels in high school. Those parents would have their daughter in a mask if it warranted it. The problem is many parents have no clue how hard of some of these girls crush the ball and just send their kids out there with no protection at all. The KHSAA should make in mandatory, if it saves 1 girl then it's worth it.

After talking with some people (softball players) about this yesterday if they were required to wear the masks during high school ball they simply wouldn't play high school. If they don't have to wear them for their club teams they aren't going to wear them for high school. I thought that was quite interesting. And the parents even agreed. I just think it should be a personal choice plain and simple.

My daughter plays 12U for a select team and she plays 2nd base. She will not be in the field without her mask on. This was a team rule before but this year they are letting the girls decide to wear them or not. Some of the girls are playing high school ball this year and the mask is frowned upon by the high school coach for whatever reason that is the coach's choice.

I also asked a couple of friends of mine who coach high school softball and they said they would leave it up to the kid and not make it mandatory. Now I have one friend who has a daughter and she said the amount if money she paid on braces for her daughter, she make her daughter wear one.

$$$$ spent on braces is more important to her than her daughters safety. So your saying that the only reason she will wear one is because of the $$$ and if it wasn't for that she wouldn't make her wear one?

I've heard of a NKY high school coach telling the girls if they show up with a mask, don't plan on playing. To me, this sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen.

 

I coach a young team, and I urged my parents to get a mask this year. I didn't require it, but highly recommended it. Boombah sells a Rip-it style mask for $25 making it a very affordable investment. Every single one of my girls now have a mask this year.

She was joking but at the same time being serious. Her daughter pitched and understands there is a risk of injury. She also said if her daughter played anywhere else she would not require her to wear it but would encourage her if she was playing 3rd.

I find the "it should be a choice" opinions don't doubt the added safety of wearing a mask. Maybe catchers shouldn't be forced to wear safety gear either? Why should they not have a choice, if pitchers do?

Batters are essentially the same distance to the pitcher and wear batting helmets. If the ball has a possibility of coming back at the pitcher as a comparable speed, why would it not make sense for the pitcher to be protected.

 

I find it odd that those in the "against" camp have no reasons that involve safety...it's essentially that being safe should be a choice.
