Is Sterling just the first?

Thank you. No comparison between the two. And it has nothing to do with the make-up of the NBA.

Dont tell that to the LBGT posse.

Can't say that there is no comparison. Discrimination is discrimination. It is the degree to which a group is discriminated against and the amount of people impacted by the discrimination that makes the comparison lopsided.

No, but it is still discrimination. It doesn't have the historical significance of racism here in the US with slavery, Japanese internment camps, or making a whole continent of indigenous people give up their lands as we wiped them out. It does, however, very much impact people's abilities to find work, receive comparable benefits. So no, it's not to the level of Jim Crow laws, but it does impact a group of people.

It is still discrimination. No argument there. My beef is with those who act like they are the same or comparable. They aren't. I am not a homophobe, I am pro-gay marriage but the gay struggle isn't comparable to the struggle of races searching for equality.

don't disagree with you but is he not allowing them to attend games, etc? That would be discrimination. Just because he believes against Gay marriage does not make it discrimination? Is there more to it.

At some point people need to quit acting like being "anti-gay" is the same as being racist. It's not even comparable. Ever.

Overall, I agree. However, some will argue that if one believes you are "born gay" then it's the same as being "born black." You can't change how you were born, thus, they're the same because you are discriminating against how one was born.

I don't want to speak for PP92 but I think he was referring to the struggles each group went through. While there is no doubt being gay for a long time in this country brought a bad stigma it never reached the level of the African American struggle.

Slavery, Jim Crow laws etc......

I believe people are born gay. Doesn't change my stance. Until gay people go through the 400 year struggle that black people went through just to get where we are now then they can lay claim to the struggle. Until then, they are suffering from an ugly form of discrimination but the struggles are not comparable.

I basically read your mind now.

The struggles are not comparable.

However, the subject at hand deals with what types of discrimination will be nailed by the NBA and which ones will not. My example was in regards to discrimination and not the history of the struggle.

And this is why I maintain that what happened to Sterling created a slipperly slope. To me it is hypocritical for the NBA to so harshly punish an owner due to racist views, if at the same time they are turning a blind eye to an owner with homophobic views. Obviously if you follow the money it shows why they acted so swiftly in one incident and are ignoring the other.

I think they acted swiftly to appease 80% of the people who make up their product.

Most gay people I know would say that gays have had it worse over the last 50 years than blacks. I'm over 50, and when I was a kid, most people didn't care if you were black. Gays, however, were ostracized.

Even if that statement was true you still have to take into account that blacks have had way more of a struggle than gays when it comes to getting equality. Gays also got their equality or closer to equality in much quicker fashion than blacks did.

I would say the situations are different. When it comes to racism 90% of this is opposed . When it comes to gay marriage around half the country approves or disapproves. So an owner who was attacked for not believing in same sex marriage would have a large group of supporters. As long as this is such a volatile topic the NBA isn't taking sides.

Just like the Sterling situation it's all business.

I do think that Sterling's history had a large role in this as well.

People see Riley Cooper and think, man, that dude was really drunk and pissed off at a concert.

People see Sterling and hear his comments, and, even though he didn't drop an n-bomb like Cooper, he had such a history that everyone just looked at the whole and said "enough is enough".

That's just my opinion.

In fairness the Equal Rights struggle and eventual Laws paved the way for other groups to get access to courts and equality much faster. For example, Love v Virginia is a case that has been huge for the LGBT marriage cases.
