He's donated money to gay marriage ban legislation so he must be anti-gay. We can't possibly have an anti-gay owner in the NBA. Let's get him.
May 1, 201412 yr There's a very simple reason why the league doesn't care as much about that: the NBPA isn't 80 percent gay. Of any of the major professional sports, the highest percentage of its players are black. And I don't have any evidence for this, but I'd be willing to wager that it has the highest percentage of black fans. People are loving to trot out the "PC police" card on this or whatever "card" they've come up with these days, but this was about business, plain and simple.
May 1, 201412 yr Author I agree that it needed to be done. The NBA acted in the best interest of the league and players. I'm concerned, like so many things today, that it will go beyond this. People start throwing around the term "Anti-gay" and things get ugly quickly.
May 1, 201412 yr At some point people need to quit acting like being "anti-gay" is the same as being racist. It's not even comparable. Ever.
May 1, 201412 yr For what it's worth, DeVos is near the top of the list for those profiting from billionaire sports welfare. The Magic paid just 12 percent of the pricetag for Orlando's Amway Center, home of the Magic, with the public picking up the rest of the $480 million. He's definitely not among my favorite people in the world, but he's not going anywhere.

I have nothing to support this claim but I'd guess a very very small percentage of NBA fans are gay.
May 1, 201412 yr At some point people need to quit acting like being "anti-gay" is the same as being racist. It's not even comparable. Ever. Agreed, those aren't equal. Maybe if he is keeping those people our of his arena we would have an issue. Main point is that doesn't negatively effect the league like Sterling did.

People start throwing around the term "Anti-gay" and things get ugly quickly. The dude funneled millions to groups that not only actively campaigned for gay marriage bans, but supported gay conversion therapies, which are the most ludicrous thing anyone's come up with in the realm of mental health since we stopped locking women in attics during the peak of the menstrual cycle. You can think being gay is a sin. You can think it's disgusting. I don't particularly care. But when that turns a corner into lobbying to have it made illegal, we have a problem.
May 1, 201412 yr I have nothing to support this claim but I'd guess a very very small percentage of NBA fans are gay. I'd imagine that any group of people assembled almost anywhere outside of Fire Island in June is going to consist of a pretty small number of homosexuals...
May 1, 201412 yr At some point people need to quit acting like being "anti-gay" is the same as being racist. It's not even comparable. Ever. No, but it is still discrimination. It doesn't have the historical significance of racism here in the US with slavery, Japanese internment camps, or making a whole continent of indigenous people give up their lands as we wiped them out. It does, however, very much impact people's abilities to find work, receive comparable benefits. So no, it's not to the level of Jim Crow laws, but it does impact a group of people.
May 1, 201412 yr I'd imagine that any group of people assembled almost anywhere outside of Fire Island in June is going to consist of a pretty small number of homosexuals... Unless it's a WNBA game.
May 1, 201412 yr When he comes out and says he doesn't want gay people coming to his arena, we'll talk. It's not even in the same realm as what Sterling did. Along the same lines, does this put pressure on the NFL and Daniel Snyder to change the Redskins name?
May 1, 201412 yr Esquire?s Pierce Asks: Why Doesn?t NBA Punish Owners Who Oppose Gay Marriage? | NewsBusters Orlando Sports: Orlando Magic, UCF Knights, Florida Gators, FSU Seminoles, Orlando Solar Bears, Orlando City Soccer, Orlando Predators and more - Orlando Sentinel There are people out there saying the DeVos family should be next. He's donated money to gay marriage ban legislation so he must be anti-gay. We can't possibly have an anti-gay owner in the NBA. Let's get him. I would say the situations are different. When it comes to racism 90% of this is opposed . When it comes to gay marriage around half the country approves or disapproves. So an owner who was attacked for not believing in same sex marriage would have a large group of supporters. As long as this is such a volatile topic the NBA isn't taking sides. Just like the Sterling situation it's all business.
May 1, 201412 yr There will be groups out there trying to expand this ruling to cover their own agendas. Don't see it happening.
May 1, 201412 yr At some point people need to quit acting like being "anti-gay" is the same as being racist. It's not even comparable. Ever. Thank you. No comparison between the two. And it has nothing to do with the make-up of the NBA.
