Well outside NKY in 5A the only real big team to worry about was BG. In 6A outside NKY you have half a dozen to worry about.

I agree. There isn't that big of a jump from 5A to 6A in NKY, if anything over the last few years 5A with Cooper, Conner and So. Oldham have been better than 6A in NKY.

Not really. Aside from SK having a very good year, the rest of the NKY 6A schools have been average at best. Campbell County was ok, and Dixie is improving and neither would be considered top 10 in the state. Ryle and Boone were way down. And sorry there were probably at least 8-10 teams in 6A that would have beaten SK last year.

I heard that with the new scheduling that is going on that no NKY school except Highlands is willing to play Scott Co. SO I guess SK is not willing to go outside to schedule either. Also if I was making the jump to 6A like a Cooper or Conner I would try and play Scott Co. and as many other schools as I could to prepare for the playoffs and playing other teams outside of the NKY 6A that has been down the past couple of years.

Yep, Cooper and Conner should go right out and schedule all the big boys, go 3-7, probably take a few harsh beatings, win a playoff game or two and then get pasted by one of the big boys again. All the NKY 6A (and soon to be 6A) programs are in a building process. SK is close to breaking through and are probably the only team that may be ready to take on, and benefit from an upgraded schedule. Building a program takes some time, and getting your head beat in regularly, and taking on games you have little to no chance of winning doesn't help your program grow. You don't hear of any teams at any level touting "hey we went 3-7, got blown out a few times, but we played a really tough schedule". If just simply playing a tough schedule was all you needed to get better, Trinity should have won the title easily last year, and Scott County shouldn't have had a chance. 8 of the 10 teams Scott County played last year ended up with less than a.500 record, and one other finished right at .500. People were taking shots at Scott County all year for their weak schedule, and that they'd pay for it come playoff time.

And you can't discount travel expenses. Many of the Northern Kentucky teams choose to play each other, I think, out of convenience. Scheduling isn't easy, and you don't just necessarily get to play who you want. There has to be mutual interest on both sides, and a mutual available open date. If the NKY teams stop scheduling each other, it would create a ripple effect, and make scheduling difficult and result in more travel (and travel costs and expenses) to all the teams. I understand your point, but many times it's not as simple as just picking up the phone (although picking up the phone is a start).

I agree with you on this point and fully understand the cost analysis by playing comparable teams in your own back door. But some do travel to Lexington to Shelbyville, etc. I hope some of the NKY will continue to do so. I was surprised to hear Ryle was not going to re up the deal since they have a new HC and with such a great Freshman class last year it would have been fun to watch that series I believe that Scott Co. freshmen were undefeated as well last year, Ryle also gave Scott Co their only loss as a program beating them in a JV game.

Both these schools already play a minimum of (3) 6A schools every year anyway. There's no benefit in playing Scott Co. until it would be necessary. Yes Scott Co., Trinity, X are all powerful schools but there are rivalries and community ties that are far more important than playing teams far outside the area. I find it funny how so many are concerned with what another school is doing let alone 2 of the smallest (as it stands today) future 6A schools in the State. There's ZERO benefit to playing SC in the regular season and certainly not preparing them for the playoffs.

I see where you might have some vaild points but in the case of Cooper while they made a great run to last years State Championship game they are still in the infancy/building stage just being 6yrs old. They also are in the smallest district boundary wise in Boone Co. and don't have the large pool of boys to draw from like Ryle, Boone Co. and Conner. In the not too distant future it will probably change and maybe sometime over the next 3-4 years they may be ready to take on a powerhouse in the regular season.

As long as there's some kind if measuring stick game in the schedule then they're fine. Some big schools choose to play relatively easy schedules that do not challenge them and those teams tend to get pasted in the playoffs because they weren't tested in the regular season.

It really isn't much of a jump for Cooper if any. The last 6 years Cooper has scheduled mostly 6A schools outside their district games. They have scheduled every single 6A school in NKY and the only school they played that wasn't 6A was NCC and Holy Cross and Holmes. So to say they should prepare for 6A, I don't think they can prepare anymore than they have been over just the last 3 years for example.

Over the last 3 years they have played Simon Kenton (1), Dixie (3), Ryle (3) Campbell County (3) Boone County (3) So that is 13 games against 6A schools in the last 3 seasons.

 

I don't think anyone can say Cooper was playing down or padding their schedule with smaller schools.
