Realignment for basketball

Recommended Posts

Wasn't done back in 06? I left KY for a while and when I came back, I found out that Scott went to the 11th.

Yes, the KHSAA did a major basketball realignment in 2006. I believe something like 53 of 64 districts were affected. There have been a couple other changes based on necessity since then. The 6th & 7th (Louisville) were adjusted a couple years ago. The 1st Region was realigned with the opening of McCracken County this year.

There is some concern from some parts that the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Regions all only have 15 teams, thus necessitating one 3-team district in each region. The KHSAA wants to eliminate 3-team districts but geography and consolidations have made that complicated for the KHSAA.

The last major re-alignment started in the 05/06 season. There have been minor adjustments since then.

I can't find anything that talks of them doing a new alignment any time soon. I think we all assumed they would take action with the consolidations in the state - the west in particular - but nothing seems forthcoming. When they made adjustments following the McCracken County consolidation in Region 1, apparently the Region 1 school representatives indicated their preference to realign within the region rather than bring in a school or schools from the 2nd Region, and so there are only 15 schools in Region 1 now. Once upon a time it was their stated goal to not have less than 4 schools in any district across the state (an achievable goal BTW), but that no longer seems to be the case as there are several. Heck, just look at the football alignment to know that they don't value that type of thinking.

I think there should be changes made to correct the west, but it doesn't seem like it's going to happen. Each of Regions 1-3 have one district with three teams in it, and Region 1 is reliant on a team like Christian Fellowship choosing to compete to not have two such districts.

KHSAA wants to eliminate 3 team districts, but do so "selectively"

Lawrence County moves to the 60th and out of the 57th in the 15th.

60th -

Belfry

Lawrence County

Phelps

I've heard discussion is next school season (14-15) with new alignment to take affect in 15-16, which would mean 10 seasons with current alignment, IIRC.

Rumblings I've heard:

1) Meade County from the 3rd Region back to the 5th. Has been associated with 5th way way way longer than it has been in 3rd. In football district with Central Hardin and North Hardin, which are 5th Region schools. In golf/tennis/wrestling/bowling region with the normal 5th Region schools. Plus, Meade is the ONLY eastern time zone team in the central time zone 3rd region.

2) Some of the central time zone teams in the 5th (namely Hart and Caverna) could end up in the southern 3rd Region.

3) Hearing Green and Adair to a southern region (4th? OR with the Pulaskis in another region)?

4) The current 18th District will be completely blown up and the four schools will end up in 3 different regions.

5) All three Bullitts leaving Louisville and joining the 5th Region. Taking the 18th District (which will be vacant) and will be joined by Meade or Fort Knox.

6) Nelson County gets a district by itself. So long Washington.

7) Washington (kicked out of the 19th) and LaRue (18th goes by by) join Marion, Taylor and Campbellsville in the 20th. Although LaRue and Washington are not currently with Taylor-Marion-Cville, they already play each other in most sports anyway. Schools roughly the same size. And keeps LaRue from being forced to play the much-larger Hardin schools.

8) 17th District (Central Hardin, Elizabethtown, Fort Knox, John Hardin, North Hardin) could lose Fort Knox to a new district with the Bullitts. Could re-gain Meade or if Meade goes with the Bullitts, LaRue could join (LaRue borders Hardin, about 15 miles from Central Hardin and Elizabethtown).

Get the 11th region all set for 2015, then nail it down. Until 2017. Fayette Co BOE is building a new high school in the Hamburg / Winchester Rd. area for 2017 opening. Also, Scott Co. last I heard was still arguing about when, not if, to finally build another and relieve the state’s biggest school which is badly overcrowded. Both these locations are in the 42nd district, which already has 4 teams, and Lexington’s 43rd already has 5. Would they change that, or just let the 42nd be a 6 team district and the 11th be a 19 team region?

Heard about the new Lexington/Fayette school. Lexington would still have two districts, so not too much change.

I don't get Scott County. Why split? It's not like Hardin County, where you have different population bases (Elizabethtown for EHS and CHHS and some JHHS, Radcliff for JHHS/NHHS, Rineyville, Vine Grove, Cecilia, Upton, Sonora, Glendale).

Some folks in southern Hardin County (southern E'town, Cecilia, Glendale, Upton, Sonora) wanted to build a South Hardin High School. Hardin County Schools balked because it would take away from Central Hardin, which is built to hold more than 1,800 (and isn't near and won't be near 1,800 any time soon).

Scott County needs to take a page out of Washington County's book. Instead of splitting, just build a brand-new mega school which can house future growth.

South Warren decimated Greenwood (except for softball). Collins did the same to Shelby County. Thomas Nelson did the same to Nelson (in boys' hoops and bowling).

If you're going to build a school, why not just build a bigger one if you can afford it?

I really don't see why school systems don't think like churches or hospitals.

Off topic but what's the new Lexington school suppose to be named?

Tried looking that up for you and couldn't find anything, probably not released yet. Here’s a link to the press release. If it doesn’t work, message me and I’ll send you the text. A redistricting committee was formed last week.

Lexington also started another high school this year, “the STEAM academy”, which is a partnership with UK to give kids the advantages of two giant taxing institutional bureaucracies. They enrolled the first (freshman) class of 150 this school year in temporary quarters in the old Johnson Elementary building and will continue adding 150 freshmen per year until they become fully operational with 600 students in a facility near the UK campus. I don’t know if this small school will then have athletic teams or not. Fayette County has two technical center high schools that have no athletic teams, so there are precedents both ways.

Casual Fan,

The technical center high schools in Fayette County aren't full time schools for students, are they? I was under the impression kids spent the morning at a public high school doing core content classes, then the afternoon (or vice versa) at the vocational/technical center working on a trade.
