Big win for CCH.

Good game tonight!!! This one really had me worried going into it. Here are some points I'd like to agree on and bring up about this game.

 

1. I thought the delay of game was called because a HC player was standing out of bounds underneath the CCH basket. That call should be a delay of game, and is a warning. Thats what I saw. I never saw a HC player call the a Timeout, if they did that should be a technical. Im pretty sure you don't get a warning for calling Timeout and not having any. But a warning would be the correct call if a delay of game was called. Smart move by HC players to get a delay, if they did.

 

2. Scruggs could have been called for at least 3 charges for dipping his shoulders. He draws the contact everytime. Thats not a defensive foul.

 

3. Todd Jacobs was huge tonight. Did anyone know that Todd wasn't even at school yesterday because he was puking his guts up all day? He must be feeling much better because he played huge tonight. To watch him change directions on his jumpstops is unreal. He can go from one direction to the other on a jumpstop better like a kangaroo.

 

4. Kurt Bovard shot well tonight. When he shot the 3pter from NBA range up by 5pts, did anyone else besides me in the gym, say outloud "NOOOOOYEEEEEESSSS!!!". Might not have been the smart shot, but the smartest ones do go in.

 

5. CCH 18 assist and 4 Turnovers? Is that right. If it is that amazing. Great job Colonels!!

 

6. As much as I loved playing and shooting at Holy Cross, I think its time for some renevation.

 

7. I heard CovCath kids skipped shcool today and camped out on the steps of the entrance of Holy Cross. Probably won't be neccessary for Friday night, but still will sell out around 7pm.

 

8. Timmy played a great second half, once he let the game come to him. He played the whole game, never came out once and never got winded. The reverse layup he had on the one baseline going under the basket was simply awesome. Named Player of the Game by the Radio Guys.

 

9. Both student sections were very good tonight. CCH was as good as ever and HC was great in size.

 

10. Quotes of the Night:

 

Joey Landrum after the game on his 2 missed lay ups "Did you see those layups, man those are a lot tougher than they look!" At least he has a positive outlook on those.

 

Tim Tierney to Ryan Earnst on the odds released in Sundays Enquirer on the favorites to win the region. "Hey Ryan, how bout them odds now?"

CCH was 5-1 in the enquirer and Earst said they would be higher if the wouldn't have to play a good HC team in the first round.

All true. As for number 3 the whole team was sick. Bondick was out for a while, and Schult spent the entire weekend in the same condition as TJ.

Interesting season for the Colonels. Beginning of the season I thought they were a very very good team. Then they kinda fell into a funk and I thought they might be somewhere in the top 5 in the area. The last couple weeks they have made huge strides and turned into THE team to beat in the 9th region in my opinion. If this team can get contributions out of all 5 positions (like we know they can) noone in the 9th region will beat them and they actually can do some damage in the state tournament. This team is capable of a nice little run. This team is playing its' best TEAM ball right now and that will carry them through the 9th and on to Rupp. Good luck Colonels.

Holmes & Highlands are the teams to beat, but Covington Catholic is no slouch either.

 

It will be an interesting regional tournament, especially since either CCH or Holmes will be playing a district champion in the 1st round...Highlands??!!?

Some Points

 

1. Jimmy Ryan was on fire in the first half, CCH did a nice job of adjusting.

 

2. HC game planned was followed to a key and CCH beat them the one way HC was going to allow them. That was deep 3's by Bovard. Bovard doesn't come to play HC wins this game. He is the MVP in my book.

 

3. I though all Scruggs moves were legit, its not his fault he is much stronger than everyone in CCH's post. I also though the travel on the up and under early in the 1st quarter was a basket. He held his pivot foot.

 

4. I don't know if any team can do as good of job on Tim T , and TJ as HC did today.

 

5. Noll kept CCH in it early. Isn't very strong inside, but has a nice touch away from the basket.

 

6. I also would have liked to see Sorrel in more in the last 3 minutes. CCH went small, and HC probably should have followed.

 

7. Great game, eventualy HC has to get over this hump, but Goetz still has my vote for Coach of the year. Two best teams in the region period were playing last night.

I just checked the stats the enquirer had and it says that. I must have saw something else I though Ryan had 3 three pointers in first half and one in the 2nd half.

It also said Busse had a 3pointer and I'm pretty sure Busse's only field goal was a lay up late in the 2nd half.

At most, I remember Ryan hitting 3 3s and nothing else. His "heat" only lasted for about 2 minutes (2 back to back 3s).

 

IMO the young man can disappear. He will be "the man" next year and needs to be more aggressive not only when he actually has the ball but , more importantly, working to get the ball (see Romes films).

In reading the rulebook it seems that the delay is proper as long as CCH did not already have the ball and was attempting to throw it in.

 

Further digging into the rulebook seems to make a case for a T.

 

A T can be given for 'delay of game by acts such as: preventing the ball from being made live promptly or from being put in play'. Interesting.

The fact that Scruggs is stronger is irrelevant to the discussion. A couple of times last night, Scruggs caught the ball about 6 to 8 feet from the basket on the baseline, CCH backed off of him, he then drove to the defender and lowered his shoulder into the defender. That's a classic offensive foul. Junior simply either missed them or refused to call them.
