A few random thoughts from a game that literally had people lined up around the corner (and two blocks down the street):

 

 

I heard quite a few people complaining about the ticket situation -- that the game should have been moved, that there should be less passes handed out, so more fans can get in. I guess I'd be upset too if I was literally left outside looking in. But it's a big game. It's supposed to sell out.

 

The coaching box simply can't contain Mike Listerman.

 

I could watch Jimmy Ryan come off screens and shoot 3-pointers for hours. It seems like he was born to do it. His last name might as well be Chitwood.

 

Tim Tierney is on the floor more than Minwax. No wonder he's hurt so much.

 

Johntai Scruggs shouldn't be able to guard and outrebounded the players he does. And if players were allowed six fouls, Scruggs would be one of the best centers in Northern Kentucky. He might be anyway.

 

Have you ever been at an event where there's so much energy in such a small place that it feels like a riot could break out at any minute and you wouldn't be surprised? Isn't that awesome?

 

The best advice of the night came from CovCath assistant coach Dick Maile, who told a frigid Kurt Bovard to "keep shooting, they'll fall." Bovard came back to hit the biggest shots of the game ... from deep too.

 

CovCath's probably my favorite to win the region now. They're playing well and they'll draw opposite of Holmes. By the way, in my Sunday column I handicapped the Ninth Region field and said Beechwood, Ryle and St. Henry had the same odds because they had shown flashes of strong play and "they all have fairly easy roads to the regional tournament." Obviously, that last line was only meant to apply to Ryle and St. Henry. Beechwood, was a better team, but obviously had a very tough road. The Tigers lost to Holmes in the first round of the district.

 

Just before leaving for the game, I sent in my all-state nominations to the Associated Press. Todd Jacobs was on my list, but I wavered on Tierney. Finally I decided to put him on it and I'm glad I did. Those two guys absolutely took over tonight's game. They combined for CovCath's final 14 points.

 

At 4:30 p.m. Holy Cross officials did a quick head count and realized there were enough people standing in line to fill the gym. Ahhhhhh, Kentucky high school basketball.

I asked someone about that game and that i thought it should be moved. That is probebly the best distict in nky, and they need to be able to hold large crowds, and HC cant.

The CCH guys started chanting "you got served" after a Noll block... to which the HC section chanted back the same thing about a minute later. The CCH section responded with "get your own cheers", and that was the last thing out of the section on the left side. CCH section was LOUD.

Further digging into the rulebook seems to make a case for a T.

 

A T can be given for 'delay of game by acts such as: preventing the ball from being made live promptly or from being put in play'. Interesting.

 

 

Ok. Did some checking with a local official (not one from last night). He said they have discussed this at meetings and the consensus is to give a warning in the case of the HC player grabbing the ball out of the net and holding it.

 

I do have a solution though. Knowing that it may happen, you instruct your player that if the other team grabs the ball out of the net and holds it looking for the delay, immediately have your player grab the ball out of his hands. If he lets go, no delay. If he refuses to let go, then its an obvious T.

Talking to Coach L today in class he said he would have liked to see one of three things... one of which happened. He said he didn't see the timeout (which there was a TO halfheartedly called but that is not important) and that it could have been a warning, but he didn't really see that happening. Scenario two is that it is a technical. Scenario three is that you let the kid run around with the ball and let the clock run out. Since HC cannot stop the clock, nor can they shoot the ball, they are just hurting themelves. But they got a warning and the trickery paid off, turned out to be a heads up play that worked.

I have witnessed this before and even have done it before as a player. I see nothing wrong with it. All it is is just know the rules of the game. I believe last year in the at St. Henry a player on the opposing team rolled the ball down the hallway towards the locker rooms so they could set up the defensive press. Its being a smart player and a smart coach.

Rolling the ball is an automatic T. It is not covered in the rulebook under the 'warning' clause.

 

I checked with an official today and he said if it was up to him, he would interpret the play as an intentional delay covered under the 'technical fouls' provisions. Its a definite hole in the rulebook. You cannot reward a team like HC was rewarded.

CCH was 5-1 in the enquirer and Earst said they would be higher if the wouldn't have to play a good HC team in the first round.

Any guess as to how many CCH students didn't get in?

Why wasn't a "T" given to HC on the last play of the game when a HC player grabbed the ball. The refs didn't call a "T" thus giving HC a sixth timeout, and gave HC a chance to stay in the game with five second left.......in the game.....

 

Cov Holy Cross did a nice thing tonight giving the CovCath players parents tickets to the game so they didn't have to stand in line. Class act HC...........

BOYS

 

3-1, Highlands: Out of the top three teams, the Bluebirds have the best chance of winning their district, and thus, have a slight leg up in the region.

 

4-1, Holmes: The Bulldogs have faltered down the stretch, but they've still beaten all the top teams in the region and are tournament-tested.

 

5-1, Covington Catholic: The only reason the Colonels are a slightly longer shot than Holmes is because they have to play a dangerous Holy Cross team in the first round of the district tournament on the Indians' home floor. Right now, I think the Colonels would beat Holmes on a neutral floor, but they might not even get a shot at the defending Ninth Region champion.

 

12-1, Holy Cross: These odds would be lower, especially after last week's upset of Highlands, but the Indians need to beat Covington Catholic just to get out of the district.

 

20-1, Dixie Heights, Newport Central Catholic: Either team could make a run if it gets hot from the outside.

 

40-1, Beechwood, Ryle, St. Henry: All three teams have shown flashes of strong play, and all have fairly easy roads to the regional tournament.

 

60-1, Conner, Ludlow, Newport: Realignment has been kind to Ludlow, but probably not kind enough.

 

No line, Boone County: With a 9-16 record, including wins over Highlands and Holmes in the past week and a half, how could you even place odds on the Rebels? Heck, for all we know, they might be the favorite.
