Who said there is an issue? Of coarse the coaching staff knew that the mother was an NDA graduate and likely suspected she would move . As far as I know, there was no formal communication of the decision until after the completion of the 8th grade season.

Now, I personally do not have an issue with middle schoolers getting playing time. But middle schoolers who profess a commitment to another program is a different animal. IMO, commitment to a program should factor into playing time decisions.

Especially when you are elevating that middle schooler over kids who are already in the program. Jumping programs is a pretty selfish move after being given an opportunity like that. Once you've played at the varsity level, transfer rules should apply, even to middle schoolers

If I am AD - Hit em in the pocketbook - A steep refundable deposit - should they participate / play varsity only. Once they enroll into the school - deposit is returned or can be applied towards cafeteria fees / books or refunded should they choose. Not applicable to Freshmen or JV level - let em play all they want on that level. Then you'll find out how serious these families are about attending a particular school

Don't know how you could quantify this, and you can't just do it to athletes. I generally don't have a problem with open enrollment. You do what you think is best for your child. It's just that this situation is really bad. This athlete has 3 years in the varsity program and the staff has a lot of time invested in her. It's like a high school junior transferring.

Pay to play -Same way some Private schools charge for sports participation fees - Same thought process for current non enrolled students that play on the varsity level - once they enroll - the fee is returned

Not true. Coaches were told after she completed her 8th grade season. No way a kid who announces that she is not committed to a program gets varsity time.

I was told by a VERY GOOD source that they knew about her intentions when she was a 6th grader. I would agree it stinks not to have her in the SK program for the next 4 years. I'm sure softball coach Jeff Morgan isn't happy about it either.

In my opinion, this is not a bad idea.

Should make for a fun night at basketball banquet!

Is there no place for character and integrity in sports any more? what are these parents teaching their kids? that it's ok to give your WORD, impacting many others in the process (players, would be players, their families), then go back against your WORD? Shame on the parents for encouraging this behavior.

Welcome to BGP, Dave63!

Don't forget the coach, for allowing it, IMO.

There are many mitigating factors in the decision to change programs. Quality of coaching, administrative commitment to excellence and sometimes just kids wanting to go to school and play with their AAU buddies. Middle school kids change their minds every time the wind blows.

all of which should have been considered before giving one's word….. spin it however you want to, it's a failed opportunity to parent one's child in morals and values.

Not sure about "the WORD". How does one give "the WORD" as an 8th grader. And maybe the parents did think that's where she wanted to play. And maybe that was where she wanted to play at the time "the WORD" was given. But just like one other poster said, MS girls change their mind at the drop of a hat. And please remember, she is a middle school girl. I can tell you with 100% confidence that I would do whatever I think is best for my kid, regardless of what I might have agreed to in the past. If my kid were to come to me at the last minute and said she was not comfortable or didn't feel like a certain place was where she wanted to be, then by golly I would fix it before she got in a position where it isn't easy to fix. That's what open enrollment allows. Talk to the school Kenton Co school board if you don't like it. It's the rules. Would you be on the band forum if it was an outstanding 8th grade flute player that was transferring that currently sits first chair in the band? It's just a decision that her and her family make together and no one else really has a say. If your feelings are hurt because you thought the program was up and coming, then she can't help that. She has to do what she feels is right for her. And if you really thought she was always committed to Scott, I think you may have been a little naive. Heck, I've been hearing rumors of her not attending Scott since she was a 5th grader. Honestly, I don't think anyone that knew her thought that she'd actually end up at Scott and this is no surprise to them. Do you really feel the staff at Scott "had no idea" this could hapen.

Heck, just last year, SK lost an outstanding 8th grade Bball and softball player to Notre Dame. It happens everywhere. There is nothing wrong with it under the current rules. We are talking about an 8th grader!

I'm not aware if the Staff at Scott knew or not. And if they did, they shouldn't have let her her play, especially at the expense of other kids. And I've heard the rumors for a while too, and am not surprised. And I get that 8th grade girls (and 18 year old girls) change their mind frequently. And, I'll never get upset about a parent doing what's best for their child. This situation just seems different. 3 years into a program and your suddenly unhappy, especially after the most successful season of that three year stretch, and things looking even better for next year and the years to come?? From the outside looking in, it just seem like Scott was used because she could play right away. It isn't exactly a secret that quite a few parents over the years have had some problems with the program. And if you had no intention of ever staying even though the program was being built around you, that's pretty weak(unless the staff knew of your intentions, in which case they are just as guilty of using the kid).

I can see why SK is the more attractive program though. SK has a chance to win the district every year while Scott continually has to go through Campbell and Brossart.
