Clyde
From a thread about the Boyle County coaches: Right now Coach Adams has 3 Drivers Ed classes, a PE class and a 3 Prep Periods. Next year he'll have 1 Drivers Ed class, 2 PE classes, 2 Wellness classes and 2 Team Sports classes, no prep periods. Chuck Smith will have 2 Drivers Ed classes, a PE class and 3 or 4 prep periods. 3 or 4 prep periods? We pay teachers to have 3 or 4 prep periods? 3 classes and 4 prep periods? That just doesn't even sound right. Same salary as the math teacher with a full load of classes?

Jumper_Dad
Are they getting paid for a full day or are we just assuming they are getting paid the same as other teachers. I know a teacher that only works about 4 periods a day then goes home, but they are paid as such.
PurplePride92
If coaches are going to be held accountable for their W/L record then they should be afforded the opportunity to be the best coach they can be whenever feasible. Until we get to a point to where a coach can lose every game but be a great teacher and still maintain their coaching duties this conversation is pointless. kyyank
If their teaching tenure is unaffected by their w/l record, then they need to teach.
Jumper_Dad
It would seem to me as if it would be up to each school/principal as to how to schedule the coaches. Shouldn't be an issue for anyone outside of the school.

One for teaching a full load and one for coaching. IMO a coach who has 3+ planning periods and 3 or less classes is not teaching full time. Just like we tell teachers that if they don't like the salary and the time commitment then they shouldn't take the job we should also tell coaches that if you don't like the heat from fans and your bosses then don't take the job. If a community is fine with 3+ planning periods and can afford the extra expenses required to staff classes then I'm cool with that. Every community gets to decide how to spend their money. Communities care more about wins and losses and communities don't care if their coaches are excellent teachers or how many periods they teach. I'm almost 40 and I have never once heard a single person ask what a coach teaches or how many classe they teach. They sure do want to know if coach can beat (insert crosstown rival here) though and at the end of the day that's all communities care about. You're living in a fantasy world if you believe otherwise. Teachers teach and coaches coach.

If a community doesn't care if the coach teaches only 1 or 2 PE classes per day then just remove the requirement that a coach be a teacher. I bet if I did a survey most head coaches teach more than what they do at Boyle.

And I'm with you. I'd be perfectly okay with removing the requirement that coaches be teachers. Coaches already are teachers.

I'm saying I bet most communities have their coaches teach more classes. Just a hunch. No data to back it up.

No data to back it up. It still depends on what they are certified to teach in as well as how many years teaching they have in. Some coaches retire from teaching and keep on coaching. I say let coaches coach and teachers teach. I'll always feel that way.
