Rathbun's isn't in walking distance but it is a short drive and is excellent. Their menu changes daily but everything I've ever had there was very good. The desserts are amazing.

If you are a Hooters fan, the one downtown is always alive and active. They also have the best staff I have ever seen at any location.

 

 

We were there in January and some guy whacked out of his head on something dropped his pants to his ankles on the sidewalk and attempted to come inside. The hostess saw him coming and grabbed the doors until the police officers that were in the restaurant headed out to take care of him. Pretty interesting night. There's a 24 hour karaoke bar/restaurant right down the street as well.

There is a diner down near the Hard Rock that is awesome. You have to walk up steps to get in and it is huge. Really good.

How close is it? Where is is located?

 

It is probably a couple of miles from the Georgia Dome, across the interstate from the Georgia Tech campus. It's not fine dining, burgers and dogs, plain or with cheese, chili, or slaw. Fries and Onion rings. If you go the chili dogs and onion rings are a must. Very greasy, might just skip the hotel and check into the nearest cardiac unit, but it was very good.

 

Their food is just okay but it is an intersting trip. Their frosted orange drink is very good and I liked the chili dogs and onion rings better than the hamburgers and fries.

Hard Rock is just up the street from our hotel. Any more info on this diner?

I think he might be talking about the Metro Cafe Diner. That is also the 24 hour karaoke bar/diner that I was talking about. It is right around the corner from Hooters and Hard Rock. The bar downstairs can be pretty interesting.

The diner portion of the restaurant is upstairs from the karaoke bar. I didn't try the food while I was there but it seemed to be pretty packed. Max Lager's is really good and it is more of a restaurant than a bar. I had a wood fired pork chop that was as good as most steaks that I've had. It's right up the road from the Hard Rock.

We spend a lot of time in Atlanta and stay in Mid-Town basically on the Ga Tech campus. We are usually there one month a week as my wife has to be there for her work as her corporate office is on the Ga. Tech campus and I go with her about half the time. There are lots of really nice places, but I can't remember all the names, but I will tell you those I can. The Varsity is overrated food wise, but is always packed. The experience is fun, though. Steel is is our favorite, a fusion restaurant in Mid-town. Fogo de Chao is in Buckhead and outstanding. If you go to Atlantic Station (between Buckhead and Mid-town), it is a great place to dine and shop on 17th St., Rosa Mexicano is a very good Mexican place there. Lots of good restaurants there, also. Hudson Grill on Peachtree in Midtown is really good. La Tagilattella( Italian), Ecco (European) are excellent, Mary Mac's Tearoom is my wife's favorite, she swears it isn't a chick place and very reasonably priced. There are not a ton around the Georgia Dome except your typical arena area places, many are good though. Driving is a nightmare there, but MARTA during the day is safe and can get you most places and cheap, you, obviously, will need to judge judge that with your mother, though. If she can get around ok, it will work. When we went to the SEC tourney a few years ago in Atlanta, we went to all the games that way and everywhere else. You can even take it from the airport. Check pricing, some are reasonable, others on the expensive side.

Metro Cafe is the one, thanks. Goldie, your Mom will be fine upstairs. We ate there twice in March of 2012, food was really good.

Thanks so much for the info. I had heard of the Tearoom. Think it is something mom might like. She doesn't get around too well, so we will be limited on where we can go.

I liked the variety of the menu. It had some combinations that you don't run across every day. We had a celebration dinner there back in December when we completed a ten year long project at work and everyone really liked it. I haven't tried steak though so if that's what you're wanting I can't vouch for it. If you are a bourbon drinker they had Pappy Van Winkle the night I was there.

The reason we might go there instead of Ruth Chris' is because my wife's co-worker at Beam in Georgia said they were the best account in the downtown area.

Near the stadium are mostly chain restaurants some good, most overpriced and not real home made fare. Eat on Peachtree downtown, then take a cab over to the stadium.......you'll be much happier.
