2014 Fish Fry Thread

Featured Replies

So, I was going to try a fish fry at St. Anthony here at Rough River. At the last minute we decided to go to Captain D's in Leitchfield. I haven't been to Captain D's in probably 15 years. Always hated it. Let me tell you, they have changed A LOT in 15 years! While the menu is basically the same, they have some new offerings. I had Shrimp Scampi over fettuccine with steamed broccoli and a breadstick and it was really solid, and a great value at $8.99. We were visited at our table twice to ask how we were doing and if we needed anything. And we were thanked on our way out. Although technically "fast food", I felt like we had more of a traditional sit-down restaurant experience. Really enjoyed it.

St. Francis of Assisi in the Louisville Highlands last night. My first time at their fish fry. Fantastic.

Offered a really nice variety of options. I had something called the "Friar Platter" that was a fish filet, two jumbo shrimp, two fried oysters, a crab cake, hush puppies and cole slaw. It was really great.

And I'm never going to argue with a $2 beer.

Sat with a couple friendly strangers as well. I'll be returning to St. Francis before Palm Sunday, you can bet.

Something I always try to do when I don't see a familiar face.:thumb:

I'd be lying if I said I sought it out. But my friend and I didn't walk in until almost 6 pm and the place was packed full. Still, nice couple people (they were wearing UofL shirts, always a good sign).

Only 2 Fridays left!

Which one are you going to tonight?

I'll be at the same one, as I'm committed to volunteer.

St. Anthony's at Rough River for me...maybe I'll make some friends!

Really come to enjoy St. Francis this year. As the UofL spring football game is next Friday, this will be the last one I get to this year, so I think I'll stick with where I've been going this year. I know that gorging myself on fried food is hardly in keeping with the sacrificial concept of Friday abstinence, but they sell a platter that comes with a fish filet, two rolled oysters, two fried jumbo shrimp and a crab cake... AND IT'S WONDERFUL. :hungry:

I have never been to a Fish Fry during lent. I am not catholic or any other faith that observes the lenten season. Anyway, my wife was flying in late, St Augustine's is practically next door, I can see it from my house on the hill overlooking the city, and thought what the heck, go give it a try. I went at 6:00, which I now know was not the best of times because it was packed. I was getting it to go, I thought everyone did that until I noticed I was probably the only one doing that. Everyone had their lunch trays and sat down at the lunch tables for the school. I had no idea it would be that packed. Ignorance of this will probably amaze most, but it just isn't something I have experienced. I have been to one catholic wedding and one funeral, the only times I have ever been in a catholic church except to vote.

Anyway, it wasn't bad, I got a fish sandwich on rye (tasted better than it looked) and a couple of sides for $6.50. Not bad at all.

Last Lenten fish fry is tonight at most fish fry venues.

Where are you going?

Most importantly, which fish fry will Getslow attend to kick off his birthday celebration?

Entirely dependent on the weather. If it's not raining tonight, I won't be at any of them as I'll be at the UofL football spring game.

If the weather isn't being cooperative in that respect, I'll be at St. Bernadette with my family.

Just like on St. Patrick's Day where everybody is Irish, during Lent on Friday's at a fish fry, everybody is Catholic (even if it is just for the duration of the meal)!
