ACE Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 It looks like(when the weather breaks) a group I play may be going to central Ky to hit it for a long weekend. Two of the courses mentioned about playing are Cherry Blossom and Canewood. I've never been to either. Can anyone tell me about these courses, their condition, etc..? Thanks.
mcpapa Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Don't know a thing about Canewood. Cherry Blossom is a nice course; used in the past as a Hooters Tour stop if I'm not mistaken; and G'town College's home course.
MentschTrachtGottLacht Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 ...... I've never heard of Canewood (ask JaHearMe, if anyone on here can give you a detailed testimonial of a central KY golf course, it is him), but Cherry Blossom is outstanding. We drive down from Northern KY to play it about 4x a year, it is a beautiful public golf course, and I'd put it in the same conversation with Lassing Pointe in Union. Outside of #17 (and to a lesser degree, #15), it has great holes, nice elevation changes, an old barn that really is a nice touch, and GPS on all of the carts. It is over-housed, if I had to offer one criticism, but you don't feel suffocated by them.

Cherry Blossom is one of my favorites places to play in that area. As far as Canewood (:no:) goes, it's not one of the desired courses in the area and if you're going to get that far off of I-75, you're better off going a couple of miles further and playing the University Club.

There are 3 golf courses in Scott Co. Cherry Blossom, which is a great layout and is always in great condition. There's Canewood, which is very unique. The front nine is like playing down Main St. on just about every hole. Houses EVERYWHERE! The back nine is the total opposite with the exception of a couple of holes. Also, the back nine has Zoysia and runs along Elkhorn Creek. Welcome to Canewood Golf Course The other course is called Longview. It's the poster child for a public golf course; you get what you pay for. You'll see folks from all walks of life out there. Not a bad layout, but last time I played there (5-6 years ago) it was in pretty bad condition. Very fun scramble course. Welcome To Longview Golf Club Also, you are only minutes away from Kearney Hill! It's on the Fayette/Scott Co line. Hope this helps.

Senior tour used to stop there back in the day. Worth going out of your way to play.
MentschTrachtGottLacht Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Cherry Blossom is way better than Lassing Pointe. I'll check with you before sharing future opinions. I've played both a lot and like them both, and both, I believe, are Top 5 publics in KY. I'm sure I'm not the golfer you are so my opinion isn't nearly as credible on the subject.

I also like the track in Paris that isn't much of a drive from the ones you mentioned. Houston something or other.

plantmanky Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 I cant play where there are houses around, its not safe.
doomer Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 I cant play where there are houses around, its not safe. Need to go to Kearney Hills or the U. Club then. Cherry Blossom is a very nice and challenging layout. Canewood is very affordable public course type layout. I probably wouldn't go there with the intention of playing the ball "down" everywhere. If I have a choice of publically available courses it is U. Club, Kearney, Cherry Blossom as my top three that I can think of off the top of my head. Houston Oaks is a nice layout also.

Houston something or other. I've only played Houston Oaks once but liked it a lot. Probably because I shot a 76 which is WAY better than usual for me.
BigVMan23 Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Cherry Blossom is a very well kept but blasé layout. It's not very exciting and has a lot of just ho-hum holes. As I said though it is well kept and the bent grass fairways are nice if it's not too wet. They also have some good tee time discounts on Golfnow so you might want to check that out first before scheduling a tee time if you choose to play here. I've never played at Canewood because of the afore mentioned houses everywhere on the course. Never heard anything that great about it that would make me want to play it either. Longview, forget it. Cherry Blossom took over this course and is trying...but it's pretty much a goat ranch and not a place your group would probably enjoy. Houston Oaks which has been mentioned is one of my favorites and would be a good place to play, but it's a little further down the road in Paris but I believe worth the trip. Kearny Hills has also been mentioned and would be a good option. There are a LOT of fans of Gay Brewer/Picadome, a city course off Harrodsburg road in Lexington. A shorter, tight challenging course with some challenging greens. Big Blue or Wildcat at the UK club is also another pretty good option. Most like Big Blue better, but I think Wildcat might be the better layout. Those are just some other options that are close by you can consider.
doomer Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 I just thought of another place I always enjoy playing, except it is surrounded by houses...Griffin Gate.
